Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

I second the nitrogen stealing properties of partially broken down wood chips. It's why you're not supposed to turn mulch in to your dirt, to just keep adding to your beds on top.

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

Ok, I had a feeling that I had read that somewhere. Thank you for confirming for me. I'll mulch my gardens with it for the winter and then utilize it next year in the run after it has overwintered.

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

Sounds like me, walking through my yard with a hose to break up the poo so it doesn't get stuck in the family's shoes. My entourage follows along behind me, dropping presents the whole way. :he:lau

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

I was just discussing getting some wood chipping action happening this weekend. Do they need to be aged? Or can I use fresh chips?

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

Yes they definitely head right for their coop at night! Once they've spent a few nights in there it's the only place for them - I had my nephew over this past weekend, he thought he was being helpful by closing the run while the chickens were inside. Well, one was still out hiding among the...

I also live near a lake and am sure that I have aerial predators. I don't have much for open yard, though, and no squirrels or mice to speak of (except one lone chipmunk that I have seen) so I'm not sure they even bother flying by. The girls may not end up free ranging next year, depending on...

Ahhhh that is also good to know. When I get some chicks going next year I will have to get them introduced to earthworms! I had to pick up three worms the other day to stick in my earthworm bin, after the hens just walked on by them. Too bad about the maggots, yuck! Chickens to the rescue!

I wish my chickens would eat worms! I legit throw them earthworms and they look at them and move on. (We have a super-invasive earthworm type that is very destructive... because lakes and fishing).

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

I think I agree that the composting ability and the nitrogen nuggets may actually be more valuable than the eggs! I spent tons of money on loam mixed with compost for my gardens and it was JUNK. If chickens expedite the composting process on top of crreating fertilizer and then on top of...

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

I was thinking this today as I was breaking up bits of chicken poop all over my lawn with the hose. My lawn will look amazing next year between the birds and our mulching mower (previous owners used fertilizer so the soil is depleted). I'm glad that you posted this - I didn't know I could put...

Lice on chickens and I pregnant

Yeah I wish I had known about the $10 Hazmat suits, I did have gloves and a mask. The hazmat suit is definitely coming in to play if I ever have to do this again!

You do make a point, but just from my limited knowledge of the liver function involved, it isn't significant enough to begin with. Also, considering the commonly recommended treatment schedule (every 7 days for a month), the eggs aren't going to be close to fit for human consumption for two...

    Hi from New Hampshire!

Lol I think they are. I was relentless with the coop treatment (I took the whole thing apart and sprayed every single nook and cranny hard core!) They're fun, either way! It's been a learning experience to say the least. I love checking out all the coop design information on here, so many great...
