I can definitely lower them! Good thinking. Currently my nesting boxes are low and they refuse to lay in them. They lay in they up high coop and poop in the nesting boxes. Yuck. I do plan on increasing the chickens to 12-16 eventually. I thought 6 boxes would be plenty originally. Thanks!
I have a detached garage that is actually more of a garden storage space, meaning I don’t really use it for a garage. I’ve been trying to convert it into a chicken coop. Seeking feedback on what more you would add, improvements, etc... the floor is concrete. It is about 9 feet high, 15 feet...
Here are some pics of the current coop. The coop is in the top but there is maybe room to expand the lower portion. I also have a shed like structure with some roosts that they hang out in during the day sometimes. Not really coop worthy though.
I actually had been thinking maybe modifying the coop so that the sheltered area ended up being more of a coop, making it larger and adding another roosting space. That definitely is a great possibility! I am glad to hear that people can have two coops. I wanted to do that anyway until the...
We currently have 4 wonderful laying hens. They are mixed breed laying hens. They will be two this summer. We have them in a medium sized coop (4 1/2 feet wide, 5 1/2 feet long, with an additional shelter area attached to the coop that is 4 1/2 feet by 10 feet). They also have access during...
Thanks rosemarythyme! Our to do list for this weekend is to add hardware cloth to the areas without. We could definitely add a window. I hadn't even thought of that. We will definitely replace the roost bar. I thought the location seemed a little odd too. We will adjust as needed. I feel like a...
Wow! I didn’t realize this was a possibility. We have an old detached garage/shed built on concrete. We hardly use it and had actually considered repurposing it as a chicken coop. Thanks for sharing this info.
Plip, that is a great idea and would work very well the way our garden is set up! Is there anything they might over-indulge on that could make them sick? We have a plum tree and the neighbors have a cherry tree which hangs over into our yard. We end up with lots of fruit on the ground. Should...
Thank you so much Scott214. We do have a garden, and had planned on letting the chickens in the garden area. Is there any problem with this? I assume it is likely best to only let them in the non food growing garden area (they might try and eat our produce).
In regards to egg colors, we’d love...
Actually, we bought this coop to get our feet wet and learn about what we need/want in a coop. We had planned on building a larger stationary one over the summer. Since we are so new though we don’t know what we want. It opens from the top and there is an opening on the side. It didn’t look like...
It seems way kinder than the horse forums I am on. I actually was lingering and reading for a few weeks then realized people here are actually kind and want to help. So I got up the nerve to post. :) I love meeting other “neighbors” too.
Thank you! I love our eagles, and oddly I feel like they keep our chickens safer because we hardly have any raccoons. Not sure if it is related. :) Are you in Bellingham? I have family up north, but on the Canadian side.
