I let mine free range and I went from 18 chickens to 12 now. So, predation does happen. So, we've started splitting the difference. We keep them penned during the week while we're gone, and let them out on the weekends. I believe that way the predators don't become too accustomed to free chicken...
What a wonderful idea! It drives me crazy when our hunting party throws away the deer liver; all that nutrient-rich meat going to waste. They all love my eggs, so there's going to be some give back going on now, by cracker crumb!
What a fantastic idea to buy leftover pumpkin from the patches! I keep reading of people giving their chickens pumpkin, but we don't really eat fresh pumpkin so I thought my girls were just going to miss out. Thank you for the tip!

Never thought of chili! We have a dog, so she gets almost all of the table scraps, though she'll have to do without the chili now. The girls can have it and I can have a gas-free dog and avoid the bad air asphyxiation!
I give fruit and veggie scraps; watermelon rinds in the summer are the best...
