GRAPHIC PHOTO WARNING!
I had a 3yo whiting true blue - barred rock cross dead this morning. I’ve processed a bunch of birds (we raise meatbirds) and necropsy most birds with unknown cause of death. I’ve always assumed this is cancer, but finally had a chance to get a pic today. What do you...
This is our first time raising meat birds so I’m clearly no expert (we’ve had chickens for eggs for probably 5 years now). I’ll tell you a bit of my sorry, in hopes something helps you. We ordered 20 unsexed Cornish cross from mcmurray hatchery (Ended up being 10 male, 10 female). They should...
What breed are yours and how old? We processed 4 of the Cornish cross at 7 weeks. All seemed great at that time. Then had 7 die at 7.5 weeks from being too hot. We culled two additional ones that day who didn’t seem 100%. Then finished the rest of the group at 8 weeks. The hatchery says they...
We ended up processing them and cooking some and freezing some.
With your case of not knowing why it died (could it have had an infection, for instance) I wouldn’t eat it.
With our birds the blood didn’t drain out of them when we took their heads off and instead pooled inside. It doesn’t appear...
This is our first time raising meat chickens. They’re 7.5 week Cornish cross. Mcmurray hatchery said butcher at 8 weeks. We believe they got too hot last night and 7 were dead this morning. Is there anything we can do to save the meat? They didn’t bleed out when we cut off their heads this morning.
We have not narrowed it down yet. Based off of basically nothing, I like Blondie. Frank’s crazy look is a bit too crazy. I know how much their looks can change, so I’m really curious to see how different they become.
We got our hands on Frank and the first pic in the main post roo, whom I call Blondie. Here are a couple up close pics of their heads (1st Blondie, 2nd & 3rd Frank). We were trying to see ear color. Blondie and the grey w bright orange shoulders have the same iridescent, whitish green ears...
Right now we have a rooster (Martha) that has been managing the flock for a year or so. So, none of these guys have gotten their shot yet. But Martha has just started charging me and my daughter. So, his time seems to be limited and we’ll get a chance to see how these new guys do with the girls.
The most colorful one (bottom photo) we call Frank. It’s short for Frankenstein because he looks like he’s put together from half a dozen different birds. He’s so strange looking and has the longest neck.
We ordered from Mcmurray for delivery the end of February. Our delivery was a bit strange because we got a bunch of extra chicks, 4 ended up dying, and couldn’t 100% determine what each was. For example, we ordered and paid for 1 male blue Cochin. The box said they sent 2 of them (in addition to...
Details for my previous post group shots. I’d guess they’re 6-7weeks.

I need help determining age and sex. I got 6 chicks on 5/29. They were hatched at our local elementary schools. Dad’s were Easter Eggers, moms were either barred rock, Orpington, or Copper maren.
Here’s a pic of the day I got them (age unknown - 1 week???). And a pic of them today. I can get...
