Since joining we have grown our flock and we just hatched our first chicks. we have on RIR roo over EE hen and one RIR roo over GLW hen. We hope to fill the bator with 12 more eggs this weekend. This group has been amazing. Every time i have a question i run to BYC for advice.
When it rains the ends of the coop get wet, but the roost and center of the room stay nice and dry. The chickens aren't getting wet, just the floor. But when the bedding in these areas get wet the bedding just sucks all the water up and the whole floor ends up a soggy, slick mess. Thanks for the...
Thats what I was thinking. The shavings cost about $7.00 which isnt bad, but when i have to replace them every time it rains. I figured sand has to be cheaper in the long run. Not to mention less work than scooping everything out every couple of weeks.
I will be putting the half walls back up for the winter, but they will not keep the rain out. Im not worried about the walls getting wet, im just tired of the pine bedding becoming a mucky, slick mess every time it rains. I was thinking of trying sand if it would be any better. Just dont want to...

I have read that chickens love oatmeal and rice (cooked) My question is, can I feed them baby rice cereal or oatmeal cereal? I have an abundance of boxed baby cereal and i hate to throw it out if the chickens will eat it. Also, at what age should we introduce treats and what age do we introduce...
Thanks for the info. We were hoping the RIR roos would be a good fit for our flock. Unfortunately there were very few choices when it came to roos in our area. I like the looks of the RIR and I was hoping they might pass on their larger body size to the Americauna mix chicks they produced.
We have 10 Americauna hens, 10 GLW hens, and 2 RIR roosters. My question is, would it be ok to mix these breeds and raise our own chicks? We raise for meat and eggs. Please share any advice or tips. Thanks
My name is Nikki, I live in northwest Florida and this is our first year raising chickens. I own a custom cake business out of my home and have 3 young sons, so I am home a lot. We only eat organic and natural foods, so raising chickens for eggs and meat seemed like a great way to monitor what...
