We actually did replace the dowel with a 2x4 on its side and took the roost out and replaced it too. They are doing great, we got our first egg yesterday and another one today.

Thanks everyone!! Our girls were supposed to arrive at the feed store tomorrow but delivery has been pushed back a week. So disappointing, can't wait til they get here. Well at least it may warm up a bit more before they get here.
We are totally new to chickens, we decided to build our coop with pallets from the local airport. We used milk crates for nesting boxes and an old antenna for a roost. Hope this works, the girls will be arriving at the end of the week.
