I started out by picking out 8 chicks about 2 years ago. I only wanted 6 but I knew maybe one or 2 might not make it to adulthood. I collected and lost some along the way. I received a shipment of 10 back and February and now I have 16 total. Did I mention I only wanted 6?
I was seriously shaken afterwards. It was difficult to take those first few bites of chicken. It was such a difor rent experience eating a chicken I raised as opposed to getting one from the store. Also eating the eggs is a different experience. My mother dropped one and was upset because she...
Yes YT how-to videos left those things out. They do make it look so easy and I was convinced that it wouldn't be so bad. I was wrong. I was ill-prepared, nervous, and hesitant. I do NOT want to go through that again. I am not totally turned off from trying again but I know I have definitely...
So I came across this thread after my horrible experience killing my first rooster and I had to share my experience. A few years ago I started thinking that as a city chick I needed to know where my food came from. I got chickens a few years ago and we have been collecting eggs ever since. I...
If anyone is looking for buff orpington chicks I have 3 available. They are 10 days old. I am hoping to send them all to the same home. Organic fed. Message me if you are interested. I am in New Haven. Thanks.
Out of all of my chicken breeds (5), except for 1 cuckoo Marans chick, every single chick that I have ever lost was an ameraucana. from the first batch of 2 I have 1. From the second batch of 4 I lost 4. From the third batch of 4 I lost 2. I love them to death but they seem to be too fragile for...
Welcome to the flock! If you have new chicks it is not a good idea to add adults to the flock. They will peck at the chicks. It is time consuming and sometimes difficult to integrate them and it should only be done when the chicks are big enough to fend for themselves against adult birds.
I have learned that our birds are tougher than we think. Their set up is fine. You don't need to do anything different. They can go out if you have a secure place for them. I am on the coast too. My chickens have been outside through this whole winter and have done just fine, even in these...
We weathered the storm just fine here in Southern CT. I was looking forward to 3ft. of snow (I know, crazy). I think we got about 1ft. I shoveled out the chicken run but I dont think anyone ventured out. We spent part of the morning watching the news but I was definitely over it when the...
We (the kids and I) will be shoveling a path to our coop which is behind our garage. I'm sure that the chickens will be fine but just in case I have a huge dog crate set up in the basement for our 8 hens and 1 rooster.
So it has been a while but my brown egg laying EE was whisked away by an unknown predator. My second EE ended up laying a pastel blue green. I ended up getting another and she just layer her first 2 eggs yesterday and today. They are a lovely light greenish blue. I have also learned to love my...
This little guy turned out to be the handsome fella below.
His name is Falcon. He has the most beautiful shade of blue on his chest, muffs, and beard. He has also settled in with his ladies quite well. I am hoping to hatch eggs this year!
So far we have been able to keep him. He wears a...
