New Chicken ran away - in danger

Thanks for the additional advice! I will try all the suggested ways to get the other chicken back. So here is more of the story: I took in a friend's rooster since he was upsetting the neighborhood. I live on five acres surrounded by 40 acre plots so could take him. We have an order of...

New Chicken ran away - in danger

Thanks so much for all your responses. Unfortunately the acreage is wooded with sporadic underbrush. She ran down one of the six foot wide horse trails and then ducked into the woods. I went back to look for her this afternoon but no sign of her. Poor thing. Left out food but just have no...

New Chicken ran away - in danger

I picked up an adult chicken today to keep my rooster company until the new chicks come in. The poor new girl was so freaked out that she leaped out of her box, over my shoulder, and was gone before I could blink. The rooster could not believe his luck and circled her several times as she...

    Not sure if eggbound...

Hi Pat- She seems to walk fine, her body feels the same, no lumps or dents. I gave her the warm bath last night, dried her, and let her walk back the coop. She looked and acted normal. This morning she was on her nest looking like she was trying to lay an egg. When I fed let the chickens out...

    Not sure if eggbound...

Thanks for the info, Dawn. Yup, I did a search for egg bound but still wonder: if she is eggbound, can she still poop? And the poop that she did expel was of the consistency that I would expect from a healthy chicken. Her appetite is good (I fed her while she was soaking) and she drank water.

    Not sure if eggbound...

Wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this...(I am fairly new to the chicken raising). My hen has been lying in her nest for two days. No egg. I put her in the bathtub with warm water for a half hour and massaged her abdomen. She pooped a lot and ate the food I held for her. Since she pooped...

    Chicken died this morning --Why?

Thinking that maybe she was pecked on the head while standing on her roost--which might explain her position. Thanks for the post.

    Chicken died this morning --Why?

Thanks for the information. Gosh, SpottedCrow, you might be right on target there. She was the henpecked one in the bunch sporting a bald skull with a fringe of feathers--looking like the shaved crown of a monk. No amount of anti-pecking goo prevented the head pecking. This went on for her...

    Chicken died this morning --Why?

Thanks for the notes. I forgot to add why I am concerned -- A neighbor cat was poisoned yesterday so worry that the chickens might be poisoned too. But, since the other chickens appear perky and normal, have pretty much ruled out poisoning. Being new to the chicken rearing, just not sure...

    Chicken died this morning --Why?

Hello all, Our beloved and goofy one year old Polish, Susan, died this morning. I found her on her belly with her beak a bit under a piece of wood support in the coop. She was still warm. Thought maybe she might have got her head stuck under there but there was plenty of room for her get out...
