Since I'm here, does anyone want to hazard a guess about my new silkies? We looked through several chicks that were hatched this spring and compared. We looked mainly for small or non-existent combs and neater crests. Also compared to the adults for clues. I settled on these two. Hardly any...
Just wanted to update: these both ended up being roos. I dna tested them.. then sent them back to their original home and swapped out for a couple older ones we *hope* are hens! 🤣😭
I have a light Brahma about 5/6 weeks old who came from a female bin at Runnings. I'm becoming suspicious she is actually a he though because she's got bright red wattles coming in already, and she's turning into a bit of a jerk. She's also surpassed my oldest chick(at least a week older) in...
I was reading a thread from a few years ago about some talented individuals here that could sex them early on. Figured I'd throw them out there and see if someone would be able to tell! The anxiety of not knowing is going to kill me but i NEEDED silkies in my life 🤣
Calling the silkie sexing experts!
I know these guys are notoriously hard to sex before reaching maturity, but I figured I'd try anyway!
6 or so weeks old
I have a feeling the partridge colored one is a roo.. but I'm hoping for hens!
Ugh, yeah I thought for sure hen with the way the feathers were growing but suddenly yesterday bright red comb and wattles. He will have to relocate 😭 it's my fault for not paying attention to the bin that said straight run! 🤣
1 week later update, her comb is turning very red and I'm starting to see red wattles, none of my other breeds have any red yet, even my older smokey pearl chick. I'm starting to wonder if she is actually a he. But still has long wing feathers and tail so I'm unsure.
The ground is flat there yes. I will see if water comes in at all, I looked all over again and am not seeing anywhere rain could get in. I wonder if the plywood was just holding moisture in there and with it gone, it won't be an issue? I don't know lol
Update!
I started ripping into the floor today, and was delighted to find a solid not so rotten wood frame! The rotten floor is just plywood nailed to the frame. So I'm going to work at removing all the plywood and then decide which direction to go in after that. The only thing is the shed was...
My only problem is I have no experience cutting wood nor do I have a saw to do so. I have a sawzall to do the floor but even that will be my first attempt at anything of the sort. If I had the know how to cut wood and do handy stuff I'd make my own coop and frame in an instant. So this makes me...
