I would add some apple cider vinegar to her water (if you aren't already!) as it will help boost her imune system. Use one tablespoon per gallon of water. Don't put it in a metal container as it will rust it. I think I would also try to locate some comphrey to feed her to help her heal up...
This is great! I have also fed mine cornmeal mush (I found an OOLD opened bag clear in the back of the cupboard--it had weavels in it. Was just going to throw it out, then thought, "Why not!!??) They loved it just as well. I figure the weavels just added extra protein.
cherig22, how 'bout...
Yes, that is what you do. While you have it off, clean everything down, refill, put lid on tight (my lid has a triangle mark on it. I try to line that up with the hole so I know which way to tip it) and turn it upside down onto your tray/dish. They work great! Only problem is that 5 gallons...
I don't know if they are exactly the same bird as what you're talking about, but I tried raising the Red Broilers from Privett Hatchery this summer. I was really disappointed in them. We are at a very high altitude (7300+) and so can't raise Cornish X's. Before this summer we only raised what...
Okay for those of you who bake thier own bread ....do you grind you wheat fresh? If so where do you get your grinder. I used to bake fresh bread and pizza all the time until my grinder gave out....
I use a Nutrimill and really like it. Used to have a WhisperMill til it broke and I discovered...
I do think it could be related to the feed, because I had the same thing happen to me last summer. I changed brands because I happened to be in a different store to pick up something else, remembered I needed layer feed and so just picked it up there as it was more convenient at the time...
It sounds like they ate them right away. This makes them tough. You need to let them "age" in the refridgerator for at least 24 hours, then cook or freeze them.
I'm also wondering if they were meat birds or dual purpose/laying breeds, or if they were older birds. When we have culled from our...
I used to use a galvanized metal waterer and it worked fine--until I added vinegar to the water!! The vinegar ate through the galvanization and it started rusting really bad, so I got rid of it and started using plastic.
Anyway....it sounds like your cover must have an air leak in it. To...

Are they molting? I know that can change the eggs some, though I've never heard that it can change the color. Just size and sometimes shape. It can also effect how much they lay. Some will stop completely until after the molt. I'm really just guessing. I've never heard of this before, but...
I have read on this forum and in books that you should let your processed chicken rest in the fridge for at least 24 hours. This relaxes all the muscles and helps to make the meat more tender. It sounds as if you cooked it the same day. Aging it may help. You could even try soaking it in a...
What a great idea! Never thought of bananas. Do you think they would eat just the peels? (We eat the rest!!) I usually compost the peels, but if the girls like them and they're good for them I would love to feed them to the hens instead.
Here's another good one:

I would just put them in the freezer for a while until they forget who/what they were and then slip them into a meal and not say anything to the kids. I got this idea from a book on raising rabbits for meat. The author says they put their rabbits into the freezer until they forget who it was...
