I guess I should have said she's the one I think has mottling!

The mottled one doesn't look like these birds. She is predominately shades of blue with some white and a few dark feathers. Her beard is mostly white and pale gray, and her head is mostly light gray. I posted a picture of her last summer when she was about 4 months old and a couple of people...

I had the same problem with the 4 Ameraucanas that I received from MPC last spring. Only one of them has a muff and beard. The two blue birds both have mottled leg color, which gives them a spotty appearance. One of the blues also has mottled feather coloring. The two wheatons I received have...

Or maybe call the conforming birds show-quality to distinguish them from the others.I have 2 standard schnauzers that are "pet quality" vs. "show quality" because they had minor flaws, but they're still standard schnauzers. I know it's a controversial subject--not trying to stir the pot!

It's especially confusing for us newbies because even the offspring of purebred ameraucanas that don't conform to the breed standard are called easter eggers, the same as mixed breed birds with some ameraucana heritage. Wish there was another term for the non- conforming birds of pure heritage.

Just an update--MPC has given me a refund for the birds.

THey are great looking birds, but they only sell straight run chicks. If you're living in the 'burbs, roosters are usually prohibited by local ordinances, and it's really hard to re-home them.

THanks very much for the link. It's hard when you can only keep a few birds--most places have a 15 or 25 bird minimum.

I am mostly interested in the blue eggs, but it is upsetting that they are represented by the seller as "APA-recognized true ameraucanas" when they don't meet the breed standard. I guess I'll have to chalk this up as a learning experience. Whatever these birds are or aren't, they are the...

They sell both EE's and "APA-recognized true Ameraucanas" at the site, so they know there's a difference. THey also say their wheaton and blue ameraucanas lay blue eggs, so I hope that will prove to be true.

I asked MPC about this bird and the no muffs/beards on the other 3. According to them, "she's a splash". They didn't respond about the beards/muffs, so I sent another email about that and also asked about the leg color. That was 3 days ago and I still haven't gotten a response. Very...
