Thanks for all your replies,
I'm studying up further and I am going to incubate some eggs from the Roo X RIRs. Will let you all know what the chicks turn out like!
Chris
On further investigation the ISA Brown is reported to be a cross between a RIR and a Rhode Island White - not the same breed. White bird, similar to the RIR, bred in the same place.
Not sure what that means for the colour genetics though.

I think that answers a lot of my questions, unfortunately i'm only able to understand the basics of what you're saying. Is there a good place to learn up on this? I've been trying to get a hold of genetics of chicken colours without success.
s+ = less dominant gene?
and females only...
I was thinking the second generation of offspring.. so the grandchildren. Excuse my poor grasp of chicken genetics, but if it's mainly only two genes for colour being expressed, and colour is all i'm selecting for:
Parents:
ISA Brown x RIR
Ss x SS
Produces:
Children:
SS, Ss

I have heard the hen is more important in determining the size of the chick than the rooster, any idea if it's true?
It is in most species including humans..
yeah, he's not a RIR, but he is a RIR cross. I'm interested in quality, but not for show or breed purity, just for utility as a backyard bird. My hens love running around in the rain and I have trouble stopping them, and she always ends up soaked!
that's good news if crossing her with new...
Hey all,
I am about to start breeding my RIR hens with my ISA-brown roo and I am hoping to produce some good dual purpose birds from the cross. I believe the ISA-Brown is a sex-linked RIR x, and the hobbyist in me wants to try and produce my own sex-linked RIR hybrids?
Is it possible to select...
I was wondering if anyone else has heard of RIRs having the occasional "silkie" like feathers which don't repel the rain? I came across it when researching the genetics of the breed and recognised it in one of my older pullets.
The pullet has issues in the rain and always gets filthy during...
Thanks for your reply,
That's a really interesting idea about the cochin as a meat bird. As my cochins are bantams (1kg cockerel, 700g pullet) it hadn't occurred to me.
What restrictions are there when crossing a large and a small bird? is it best to have a large roo/small hen or small hen...
I put together some pics. It's been pouring rain so no new ones, but here they are anyway.
Stewie the ISA Brown cockerel: (At 16wks)
Grommie, Blizzard the Rhode Island Reds and Stewie again: (6 months)
The barnvelder, light sussex pullets and an australorp cockerel who has since been...
wow, i have a pair of pekin ducks and a barred rock pullet. when the ducks were younger they both decided she was their mother duck and followed her around over all our other hens. maybe barred rocks make good ducks??
I was convinced my white sexlink roo was racist when he totally ditched my RIR pullets for three older white sexlink hens when they came to stay.
I think it has more to do with nurture than nature though. the three pullets of three breeds i have currently are very close and act as though...
Hi,
I hope this is the right forum for this..
I've recently built up a little flock in my backyard of a variety of breeds of chickens (and 2 ducks.. buy they're just trouble). The eldest hens have been laying for a few months now and I want to start incubating some eggs. I'd like to keep...
