Great advice. I'll cut back on the treats and I'll cut back on the birds. That should bring an end to my dilemna and harmony back in the coop.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND ADVICE.
I greatly appreciate it.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS from Northern Quebec!
Now here's an observation...
Today I fed the girls some leftover ham. They gobbled it up. Within 5 minutes they were pecking at each other.
QUESTION: Can giving them meat make them aggressive?
When I think about it, the pecking started around the time that I fed them some dinner scraps of pork...
Thanks for the tip. I've read the same thing about a lack of protein. Something I forgot to mention was that I dry the eggshells and then put them through an electric meat grinder with hard high protein puppy food. Every morning I sprinkle some of that on their feed. In the summer they eat a lot...
WOW! Sounds like you've got the Disneyland of chicken runs over there. Sounds great. At times I introduce a box then remove it; introduce a platform for a few days then remove it; hang some cabbage like a tether ball, etc. I'm open to new ideas though.
I have two heat sources. One is a 150W lizard heat lamp, the kind that heats but doesn't project light which is controlled by a thermostat. The temperature is maintained at 7 celsius (44F). The other source is what I call my heated floor. It's an electric blanket on the floor. The blanket is...
WOW! Really? That's the first time I've come across that kind of information.
Can you tell me what you feed your chickens please? If I'm overdoing it, I'll gladly slow it down. Keep in mind, what I listed is not a daily thing. One day might be cabbage and pasta, the other pumpkin and rice, etc...
Sorry for the confusion. The second measurement includes the nesting boxes because they sometimes choose to move in there early in the morning. The coop includes 3 boxes 12 inches deep by almost 40" wide.
AH HA! The LIGHT issue. Kept coming back to me during the night. Short answer is NO, there is no light in the coop itself, just in the enclosed run. Last night I did a lot of reading, watched webinars and learned that the bare minimum of 14 hours of light (16 hours is better) is not being...
Thanks for your comments. We won't be building a bigger coop. Instead we'll be supplying fresh chicken eggs for our household only. The friends and in-laws will have to go back to the grocery store.
The girls have got 64 square feet - 8'x8' - in the enclosed run and about 14 square in their sleeping quarters which they only go up into at night.
Thanks for the link to the article. I'll be reading that next.
Thanks for your reply. By bum I mean the vent. Nasty business.
The roosts are almost at the same level. They make an "L" shape so one is only slightly higher than the other, that is, the thickness of the roost.
Fishmeal eh? I'll try and find some around here. I've been giving them sardines these...
Thanks so much for your response. What an eye!
The four girls left in the coop are still battling it out. The roundest chicken is no longer just poking, she's down right BITING. Mean little mother. She seems to have taken over the job of the girl I put in a cage!!!
They do venture out. Some...
Thanks for reaching out. I've looked into chicken peepers and ordered some from amazon.ca but they won't reach me until Monday, Dec. 9th. We're far up there...
In the meantime, I'll be calling an agricultural co-op at 9am this morning to see if they stock peepers. It's 90 minutes away but it...
