Lucky! She's such a pretty thing too!
I learned when we hatched opal and cream legbars that the back striping is considered the most important factor in sexing them. Super defined is female, blurred out should be male. Eyes stripes and heads spots are secondary. A breeder who was breeding for...

It's early to know for sure, but in my limited experience, any hint of redness in the comb before 10 weeks is a good sign for being a rooster. 🤷♀️
I hope this is the right place to ask. I'm interested in learning more about the genetics of our flock mostly for fun, and a little for what to expect when breeding next year and for rooster selection.
We started out with Bovan Browns, then got a couple Barnyard mixed birds and though the...
Only been raising chicks this summer (50+ chicks though and all kinds of combs), but any that looked so dark pink/red that early turned out to be cockerels for sure. 😣
Got their 6 week/off heat updated pics today. They're actually 7 weeks but close enough. Thought it could be helpful for someone in the future. I've dotted them red for probably pullets, blue for definitely cockerels.
6 week update!
Pretty sure this is how it's turning out for us.
1 cream pullet & 2 cream cockerels (very obvious now that they've got feathers, plus cockerels combs have been reddening over the last week or two)
2 opal cockerels for sure and 2- 3 opal pullets. The barring is very subtle and hard...
Yes, mine is exactly like this. 🤦♀️ Perfect temps on the outer ring and 98.0-98.5 on the inside ring. I only realized after I just finished a hatch last Friday. I had marked the inner ring eggs. I think 14 out of 16 outer ring eggs hatched, but only 2 out of 6 inner ring eggs hatched. Both...
This is an auto-sexing breed, so they should be sexable by down color, but I'm new to having this breed.
I think I know for sure about 4-5 of them, the chick at the top is clearly male, and two of the splits look to be male as well, but not sure about the others. A couple have nice distinct...
So we hatched some chicks from our own chickens 3-4 weeks ago. We also hatched some purebred bought eggs, but we had dividers in the incubator that mostly worked 😆, so I'm pretty sure this chick is BYM and that we watched it hatch from a Bovan Brown egg. The chick was yellow with just a hint of...
This guide was super helpful. I saved two malpositioned but otherwise strong and healthy chicks so far that would not have hatched by themselves. I plan to do the same with any incubated eggs in future that need just a little helping hand to enter the world.
