    Broody in Michigan Winter?

I wish! None are currently broody. Only had two broodies this year and none successfully hatched (too many hens and roosters, and I did not separate the broody out to set). Incubator and heat plate it is! :)

    Broody in Michigan Winter?

@aart, thank you for documenting your winter broody adventure! I'm very torn about incubating and raising babies this winter... though I'm in much milder central Virginia! Doesn't really get below the upper teens F and most nights it's in the upper 20s, or more, with most days at least above...

Hatching and brooding chicks in winter

Well, 21 days to hatch chicks and the brooder will be outdoors :) But yeah, sounds like they'll be fine... thank you for the encouragement! I'm still a bit nervous but going to give it a try!

Hatching and brooding chicks in winter

Thank you! Very reassuring to hear! I'm not going to stagger hatch with the Guineas yet, they don't normally start laying until at least March. Last year I accidentally hatched one chick with the Guineas - twice! Amazing how similar some of those eggs look. Lol

Hatching and brooding chicks in winter

Thank you so much, this is very helpful! Sorry, I don't know how to respond to snippets of quotes and then bring in another quote. I agree they won't know it's winter while indoors but they'll be in for a bit of a shock when they do move out 🙃 It's reassuring to know that they can go out...

Hatching and brooding chicks in winter

Appreciate your advice! It's the 22 egg Nurture Right 360. We have tried different incubators and had the best success with that one so I'm sticking to it for now. I love your idea of staggering hatches! Maybe when I get a second incubator I'll do that. I don't think I want to do that with...

Hatching and brooding chicks in winter

Hi y'all! It's been a long time since I've posted. So first, am update! Our flock has grown, shrunk, grown... with lots of breeds coming and going and two hens, Casey the Easter Egger and Sage the Plymouth Rock, remaining of the original flock we got five years ago! Anyway, this spring we...

Vicious chick - would you cull?

Last spring we got a batch of about 15 chicks of various breeds (all large fowl). One of them - a speckled Sussex - was aggressive with all the other chicks, going straight for their eyes and injuring them. We watched for 2 days, tried separating, adjusting things, etc. - but in the end we...

Chickens and ducks versus honey bees in spacing?

Hi! We're getting our needs end of April. Our mentor, who is the president of the local bee club, said there's no problem keeping them near the chickens. They might share the water, but won't bother each other. Good luck!

    Fermented feeding

It would depend on the grains, no? Btw, my FF has very little water in it. It looks kind of like cement when I feed it to them- I scoop up large "glops" of the stuff into dog bowls, and when stirring it definitely looks more solid than liquid. Like really thick, cooked oatmeal.

What do you think about these topics? 1. How I would train a mean rooster (and the science behind it) - detailing the "change of emotion leads to change of behavior)" principle and explaining a little about learning theory, classical conditioning, e.t.c 2. "How to train a dog to be calm near...

    Fermented feeding

I started fermenting their flock raiser crumbles this week, so I can't attest to any health benefits as of yet, but I do something very simple (which I read on this site, of course): First batch got to sit for a full 3 days. Then I started using it, stirring every time before taking a...
