    King County, Washington!

Hi all. I posted this on the main Washington group but wanted to put it here on the more local thread in case there's any interest. I received a few "overflow" pullets from a co-worker who went on an ordering spree when she was getting chicks. I accepted because she spent a fair amount on...

    Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi all. I received a few "overflow" pullets from a co-worker who went on an ordering spree when she was getting chicks. I accepted because she spent a fair amount on unique breeds (Swedish flower hen, Bielefelder, etc.) Anyhow, long story short of course the Ameraucana has turned out to be a...

Hi @culturalinfidel ! No, I do not think you have anything to worry about if you source some chicks through Baxter Barn. I think it's fair to summarize the discussion on Baxter Barn as being more related to level of customer service as well as the health of chicks/pullets, which I do not believe...

@poppyflock Portage Bay Grange does have birds year round. They do not have as wide of variety as Baxter Barn, but they had breeds I was interested in nonetheless. If you go to their website they have an online system that shows you what breeds they have available, hatch date, and quantity...

poppyflock, did Cory/Baxter Barn offer a refund? Very disconcerting to hear about your ordeal. Especially with coryza being so infectious, I would be nervous about sourcing other birds from that same location. As it happens, I purchased two pullets at the end of June too from Portage Bay...

I would bet that ochochicas has a much better idea of what breeders have to offer. I believe you are correct that the variety will be much more limited as breeders are going to have a much sharper focus on a specific breed or two. I don't know what breeders are around the King/Pierce/Snohomish...

Hi sphinxface Sorry to hear about a rough start to your chicks. I guess I should clarify that I am not a die hard advocate for Baxter Barn. I've gotten 6 chicks from them on 2 separate occasions and all has gone well, but that is just my personal experience. If you're having issues with chicks...

I would respectfully challenge that "you will not get any better quality chicks from other random feed stores". True the genetics will not be any better as the chicks are coming from hatchery stock, however I strongly believe it is still important as to how those chicks are handled, housed, etc...

Hi ochochicas. Thanks for your feedback on Baxter Barn. Have you ever purchased any birds from them? I'm curious because I'm looking to add two hens this spring/summer and my personal experience with Baxter Barn has been nothing but positive. I previously purchased an Austrolorp from them 2...

Hi sdlauri. Buying hens in fine, however you should be very cautious about who you buy hens from on craigslist. A lot of people will try to pawn off older hens that are well past their peak production rate and they will not provide many (if any) eggs for you and also leave you holding the bag on...

    King County, Washington!

Ha ha yes I'd say Skagit is plenty close! My thread could be a little mislabeled with "just" King County in the title. My intention was to have a forum where people within a relatively close proximity could exchange knowledge and even possibly items for sale, such as chicks, feed, etc. So of...

    White Earlobe?

Thanks for the additional information/explanation Lora Indy. My two Orpingtons where purchased from a commercial breeder at the local coop, however as you said about cross-breeding I truly have no way to verify the purity of the lineage of my Orpingtons. Of course I bought the very last two...

Orpington Love! When is too wet?

Hi "chick clique HI"! I have 2 Orpingtons and 1 Austrolorp (basically another Orpington!) and live in the dreary rain of the Northwest. We know a lot about damp here and things take a very long time to dry out when it's only 40°F during these winter days. First off, just a good old dirt floor...

Hi jslivyak and welcome to BYC! I'm from a ranch in Montana but currently live with my wife in here hometown in Washington state near here family. As I mentioned my family ranches, raising beef cattle, something I spent my whole life doing through college. My family has raised cattle for the...

    White Earlobe?

I wanted to follow up on my previous post asking about the white earlobe issue that came up in one of my Buff Orpintons. For several days I treated it like Favus and applied a topical anti-fungal creme. However, I discontinued this practice because 1) there was not change in the color of her...
