Sorry to say our sweet little rat passed on early this morning. As always, it's nice to have BYC support -- what a great group of people. I will keep the Garden Grove vet recommendation for the future. Thank you very much.
Does anyone know of a vet knowledgeable about rats in Orange County CA or surrounding areas? My son's pet rat is lethargic & needs to see someone asap tomorrow!
Thanks!
Wanting to buy a candler. I know I could make one but don't want to deal with it. Wondered whether anyone has found something available commercially that works great?
So I used the ivermectin pour on on the two silkies, one drop on the skin back of neck. One recovered very quickly (she had already quit the nest & I think the exercise & fresh air helped too). The other's face still looks bad. I retreated her after 4-5 days and it didn't help. She hatched...
Thanks for the tip about face mites - I took that & found this article

which seems to describe what they have.
Apparently it's due to a mite, Knemidocoptes mutans, and the treatment of choice is ivermectin.
Can you get ivermectin...
I have twin black silkies who have been sitting on a nest together for about 3 weeks (they've had eggs for 2 wk).
In the last few days I noticed they have a scaly, crusty rash around their eyes & ear lobe. They try to scratch at it.
The rest of my flock seems fine.
Enjoyed the recent posts. Chix4chix, thanks for the mention of the OC of yesteryear. Must have been great. Also enjoyed the info about green/local restaurant.
Thanks everyone for your nice feedback.
There's an article in the learning center on dry incubation.
