I didn't see any mites/lice on them, so do you think it's safe to dust w/DE just to be safe? What would you use for mites? What about those things you hang in the house near bird cages to prevent them? Anyone ever use one of those??
I've been trying for the last hour to post a picture - but in comparing photos in the past of these two and the ones today their combs are very very pale - other than parasites what could cause anemia? How can I boost it??? Also, they're house right next to a large window but I did cover it...
I don't have a wire bottom in this cage as I thought it a bit cruel to not let them scratch - also, now that I'm really watching them, Rizzo's beak seems a bit longer - any advice on weather or not to trim it??
maybe i'll throw in some pellets as a treat - but i like the idea of the treat sticks so i'll pick some up at work today - anybody have suggestions for a different type of bedding? Was contemplating corn cob but I don't know if I'd have a problem with them eating it - suggestions?? I'm new to...
They've had the yogurt mixed with egg and honey, but they're not a big fan of it. The definitely love the egg, which led me to believe they might be eating the eggs she was laying although I cannot find any evidence of that (broken shells, etc.). I just checked them head to toe for lice/mites...
Thanks for the thoughts - what would I use to worm them? They've never been wormed - can I give them cayenne pepper as I did with the larger chickens? Or I do have some Wazine, but I'm not sure how I would dose them since they're so small. To be on the safe side, even though I don't see any...
I have two Seramas, brother and sister, born 5/09. The hen started laying eggs at the end of September, laid a total of 10 eggs (5straight, two days off and then five again) and then stopped and no eggs since. The rooster was very vocal up until last week, and has not uttered a sound in over...
Thanks for the suggestions - I only have two hens outside (lost my 3rd this week to unknown causes) - so I don't sell eggs they're just for our table, but ethically I wouldn't use the eggs within the required withdrawal period - I'm new to all this, and as I stated, I didn't even know you had to...
I read on one of the boards here the other day that you should worm your chickens. My question is with what? I have them on layer and mix in DE, which I was lead to believe was enough by an article I found online on the uses of DE. I picked up a bottle of Wazine today but while reading the...
UPDATE - Honey passed away this morning, although she seemed somewhat perkier at 6:00am and no longer had diarrhea. By 10:00 she was dead. I'm going to try to upload a photo of her with the other hen, as you can see in the photo her wattles and comb are much smaller, so now I'm wondering if...
UPDATE - Her stool is looking formed, not as wattery. She was just standing in the corner of the dog crate so I got a shoebox with shavings and put her in it and she laid right down and seemed to be straining for a moment and then closed her eyes. Maybe she's been worn down?? Also, I've run...
I have three hens who up until today have been healthy. One is white leghorn, the other two are red sex links. All were born in April of this year - only two have been laying up until last week when we got a third egg one morning, but nothing since. This morning one of the reds wasn't outside...
Well, the light seems to have worked!! I had to hang a small flashlight in the coop where the nest boxes were and switched it on a bit before dusk last night. With all the rain we've had the chickens had been just sitting out in the rain - I was worried.... last night I went to perform my...
Thanks for all the replies! My chicks are of unknown age - but my guesstimation is 5-7 weeks (I bought them at a local feed store and was amazed at how quickly they grew) - I've had them 4 1/2 weeks, and they've been in the coop exactly a week today. There are rungs spaced approx. 3 1/2 inches...
My six chickens won't use their ladder to get back into the enclosed portion of their coop at night - instead they lay huddled in the corner together - so each night (don't laugh) I got out and physically move each one into their "bed," which my partner refers to as "tucking them in." When, oh...
