I have a 2-year-old bourbon red hen that started laying eggs mid-March, went broody and started setting on them for good April 3. She started out with 11 eggs, broke 2 within a week, both of which had blood vessels and appeared to be developing normally. On her expected hatch date, she carried a...
Took care of separating Tom last night. I put him in with chickens. Looks like its going to work. Was afraid he might fly out of there four foot fence but he seems to happy being with chickens, even slept inside the chicken house instead of sleeping outside.
I have a one year old BR Turkey that started sitting on 15 eggs.
Now about every day that I get home from work there are broken egg shells outside in the run. I checked last night and I believe I can still feel 8 eggs under her. I hope its not the Tom, I got it planned to get him separated from...
Update 3: I got home from work yesterday and I noticed broken egg shells in outside run. Then when I checked on hen she had a few eggs out from under her and one of those was broke. I took it and finished breaking it outside and did notice it was fertile because of the big bullseye. Hopefully...
UPDATE 2: I was able to get eggs in nest today, she has 15. I just got home and she is back on nest. This will be the third night she has been on nest, but she spends most of the daylight hours outside in her run, mostly pacing fence and calling out. I hope this is normal, just glad she is...
UPDATE: Today turkey hen spent most of day outside in her run. But as evening came she is back on next. So hopefully tomorrow if she gets off the nest I can put the eggs in the nest I've been keeping inside. I would try to put them under her but she hisses at me, so I wait till she off.
well guess Thomas is sleeping outside alone. She is still on the nest, now just have to find a good time to swap her eggs I have been keeping inside. Then wait patiently for 28 days..............
Got home from work today and my turkey hen was on her nest of eggs. Its been about 3 hours and she still there. Had to go in her pen to feed her and she raises her feathers when she sees me. Is this a good sign she might be broody? Probably to early to tell, just really excited, its my first...
If I separated a hen from the rest of the flock and gave her a full nest of eggs would she go broody. Also would the hen need to be over a year old. She been laying eggs since fall.
Is it possible to have a broody chicken hen hatch turkey eggs? I still have confidence in my turkey hen that she will go broody. But was wondering if the chicken hens went broody first if they could set on the eggs. Just courious. Thanks for any input on this.

Just for the heck of it, typed in turkey sperm viability within hen on Google, and got links to a couple of USDA research article abstracts (http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publications.htm?SEQ_NO_115=163523). Sounds like the 20 -30 isn't too far off. They're saying anywhere from...
Should the Tom keep breeding the hen while she laying eggs? I haven't seen them breed in awhile. She more interested in eating grass. And he more interested in chickens.
