They are all getting game bird starter. I had done a little googling and read that chicks could have game bird starter, and knew the guineas needed it. All but 2 or 3 of the dead keets were alone in a corner when I found them. Not anywhere near the heat source. They seem to be pretty stupid... I...
I bought all of the birds from Cackle Hatchery. 10 of the 12 keets were dead in the first 48 hours (they sent 17, but I ordered 15). I am keeping them in the same brooder. However, I have a lower heat source specifically for them. The ones that died I think never went under the heat source at...
What are your overnight temps looking like? We've been in the mid-80's to mid-90's during the day. Overnight drops down to around 60. I got 25 chicks, and 15 keets last week. The keets haven't done well and I'm down to only 4. I lost my first 2 chicks last night. Otherwise, everyone looks great...
All of my birds are free range. I had 2 hens go broody at the same time. Only 1 had fertile eggs, but the chicks split up between the 2 of them after hatching. I haven't done a single thing, other than make sure they could get back into the coop, via a chick size ladder. The chicks go all over...
Ah, okay that makes sense. They definitely defer to him and stay out of his way. He sure is magnificent. 😍 He loves to strut and puff himself up. Luckily he's been pretty chill towards me, since I don't really try to handle them directly.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to get close enough to look. I don't "socialize" with the chickens, so they don't let me get within 2-3 feet of them before they move away.
No big deal on the breed. I mostly just wanted confirmation that they are in fact roosters.
What's interesting is that my Black Sumatra is the only one that crows. Chickens sure are weird sometimes.
So you're implying that they sent me multiple chickens that I did not order?
ETA: none of the chickens that are supposed to be marans have white skin. There are hens in the background of the first photo, that would be the same breed as the rooster.
The package I ordered doesn't include Cochins. It would be one of these:
French Cuckoo Marans
French Black Copper Marans
French Black Tailed Red Marans
French Black Marans
French Wheaten Marans
Barnevelders
Though when I looked up Black Cochins, I can absolutely see why you would think that.
Last year I ordered the "dark brown egg female surplus" from cackle hatchery. I ordered 10 5 of them and I suspect that 3 of them are roosters. I wasn't positive until the last week or so when I had a minute to slow down and just watch them for a bit. They are absolute units too! Positively huge...
I'm hopefully getting quail this summer. I had also wondered about needing a male.
On another note... if you haven't figured out housing yet, this is a great building plan for a quail hutch. That's what I'll be building for mine.
I'm obsessed with their coop plans. I've already made one of...
I'm not sure if you've checked out The Garden Coop Plans?
Their plans are great. I own almost all of them. In the middle of building "the basic coop" to use as a brooder. Would be a good size for 5 bantam.
Here's an in progress of mine. I decided to add length to the legs, so it looks a little...
I used plywood on mine. I also used *gasp* pressure treated wood.
I've only got the coop built so far. I'll be combining it with a small run. The setup will look very similar to your photo.

The Run
Here's an in progress pic of the coop. I extended the legs a bit, to use the...
