    Fox!

I've lost 9 chickens to the local fox clan so far this year. They got over my 5 1/2' high fence and got in the coop which I had unwisely gotten used to leaving open. Today I finished an extension to the fence. It's now about 8' high. I hope it works.

Warning Graphic Pic - Was this a hawk attack?

They are protected because people would kill them. Before they were protected, their numbers were greatly reduced to the point that many species became threatened and/or endangered. This is bad because they are an important part of the food chain; they help keep down rodent and snake...

Thanks for the link, Mandy. Bit the bullet and went out to the breeder in NE Jones County. Gentleman has a nice poultry breeding outfit set up, and sells beautiful Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Dominickers, and Buff Orps, as well as bantams, guineas, and I'm not sure what else. I brought...

Hey, you still around? I'm in Laurel, and was wondering if you know of any reputable poultry breeders here. The store I got my Dominiques from a couple of years ago went out of business, and would like to buy local if possible. I have a number for a breeder out towards Sandersville but don't...

    Fox Rant

One fine morning two weeks ago I was enjoying my fourth or fifth cup of coffee around 8 a.m. when I heard my dogs raising a ruckus. I looked out the back window in time to see one of our neighbourhood red foxes making off with one my white crested black Polish hens, headed towards the woods...

Who have you had good luck ordering chicks from??

I ordered 25 white crested black Polish from McMurray Hatchery last April. All 25 arrived and were healthy. A cold snap a couple weeks later culled my flock somewhat, but that was not McMurray's fault. My "mystery" chick turned out to be a Barred Rock rooster, who was a magnificent bird...

    Fish deformities and ick

Have you tested your tank's pH level? In my experience, a low pH level can contribute to fish's susceptibility to ick and other diseases. Also, be careful about ammonia buildup, which can happen if you don't do regular, partial water changes (you seem to have that well in hand, though). I...

Name your quietest chicken breed - Poll

My four Dominicker pullets are only two months old, but they talk a lot, to my mind.

Sidney, MT Newbie thanks to Harlanshollow

Well I appreciate your telling me. I've been wanting to move to MT for the better part of 20 years, and have convinced my wife of 11 years to go. We're hoping next year will be the year. I've only been twice, and was in the mountainous regions in the southern and western parts of the state...

Sidney, MT Newbie thanks to Harlanshollow

Good luck this winter! Heck, I'm worried about keeping my four hens warm, and we seldom get heavy snowfall here. I was curious: what brought you to that part of Montana, if you don't mind my asking? Sidney seems remote, even by Montana standards.
