OK...my chickens are a little over a year old now. I have a buff orpington that seems to be broody. I thought she was going to sit tight when i would catch her in the same box all puffed up for a few days straight. Then yesterday i went to water them and she was not in the box anymore. While i...

I questioned my "Tax Man" about this and his response was.........
If your expenses are far more greater than your income it's then considered a hobby. With only 10 birds I doubt that your income is greater than your expense. I know as a fact that mine are not and I have twice the amount of...
My chickens would not eat the crumbles either. I noticed them always pecking around for the bigger pieces. So I just started feeding the pellets and they gobbled it right up. So my recommendation is to just switch to the pellets. My birds also free range and they are never shy about gathering...
I am confused on the matter of feeding chicks that are being raised by a "mama hen". If a hen goes broody and has a flock of chicks do you have to provide them with chick starter crumbles? My hens are free range for about 3 hours daily and are provided with layer pellets and oyster shel and of...
I have 12 hens and in rooster that are all 18 weeks old. I started supplying oyster shell at 15 weeks and grit ever since they were chicks. It doesnt seem like they are eating much grit at all from the feeder that is in the coop. These birds free range for about 3 hours per day. Do you think...
I completely understand that egg production doesnt rely on the rooster. I was just hoping that if the rooster was trying to get a little frisky with the hens that it meant egg laying was going to begin soon. Also I heard the rooster crow for the first this morning! That was too cool!
I have 12 hens and 1 rooster that are 18 weeks old. My roo has been really trying to mount the hens and mate. Last night I noticed that there are a few hens that are really being submissive to him. While the others are trying to escape! Does this mean that I should start finding eggs soon or is...
First off, install a fence. As for them returning at night. They will return to the chicken house to roost around dusk. You will never keep them in your yard without some sort of fence. I would really kep any eye out for them if there are dogs around. A dog may not really attack a chicken but...
I am agreeing with you all on the fact that this chicken has a very red comb and alot of waddle, but he has yet to crow or even try and crow. Whats up with that?
Well, after doing reseaerch on hens and roosters poster. I am starting to believe the E/E (pic #1) is a rooster? I really hope not due to the fact that this is my daughters baby and she will be disappointed if it is a Rooster. Any thoughts?
I started really paying attention to his actions when I turn them out. He very well just be a male due to the fact the way he acts around the hens. I know he is still young but it seems like he is taking on the "who's your daddy" role!
