    The other spur is broken. There is a black spot that looks like a scab where the first spur fell off ... but it's not like an "open sore" or anything like that. For wood ash ... do you literally mean ash from burned wood? I haven't put anything out ... other than pine shavings in the main...

    The feather loss is in about 3 spots. Other than the obvious of checking him for little bugs ... how would I check for mites? Attached are a few pictures of his poop and of his legs too (he keeps shaking the one that had the spur fall off).

    I have checked him over and I didn't see anything ... but I wouldn't know what a mite would look like on him. I didn't see any bugs at all on him.

    I am not sure I am posting in the right place - but I just posted pictures in the main thread. He is eating and drinking - poop is black tar-like.

    Thank you Wyorp for the welcome. Attached are three photos. We are unsure how old he is because he was given to us about a year ago - we think he is about 18 to 24 months old. We feed him Purina laying pellets (the same as what we feed the hens) ... haven't had any problems with food at...
