There are 18 hens and no rooster. We just gave him away as he was too aggressive towards us. He bit my husband several times and charged at him. The chickens are around a year old by now, maybe closer to a year and a half. We have 6 nesting boxes and an 8x8 coop with a big run. I can't remember...
I would love some help with some issues we seem to be having with our hens. Some of them have some feather loss near their tails and a couple have featherless rumps. This is our first year having chickens and we are still learning. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Seems like our hens are still laying and doing a great job of it without artificial lighting so far. We had a dozen from 17 yesterday! And by the way, how do I make those cute little dancing and smiling icons?
We had 8 eggs today including a nice olive colored one! I wonder if one of our hens finally started laying...? One egg seemed to be smaller than the rest of them.
They have a run also. There's 17 birds in a 8x8 coop. I don't know the size of their run off hand but its a decent sized one. They can go between the run and the coop all day long but then I close their coop up at night to prevent predators of any kind getting to them.
No artificial lighting...yet. I'm still debating whether or not I want them laying through winter. If I do use lighting, will the red heat lamp be enough? We are going to put one in when it gets colder just to take the edge off the biting cold. I read somewhere that it would suffice but I may...
