When I have a problematic roo, or even just obnoxious teenage cockerals who want to be chased to get back into the Hensly Palace, I just say fine, spend the night outside. Very often that's the problem solved without any human having to kill something that more than likely wont be good to eat...
So as an update to the rotten egg exploding in the brinsea, all but 4 of the 19 had to be chucked, but those four are now day 19 and seem to be fully developed. I am hoping that if they made it this far, we may actually get a live silkie or show girl (crossed fingers and ties). If not, I had...
It's like the Whiting Super Blue/Sapphire Egg Layer cross. By hatching 2 -3 (sure to be only one girl) of the largest Leghorn hen egg x OE Roo increases the size of the smaller CCL and Ameraucana blue/green eggs, but tends to make them a lighter tinted green. But when you just add one or two to...
And laid this morning, so should be good to go! Now I just need a mama to go broody sometime between now and Easter to foster them after the hatch. The F1 generation were 2 crosses: crested cream legbar x welsumer and blue ameraucana x birchen marans. f2 those were crossed. Every now and again...
Tomorrow I will cull the lot if it continues and wash out the new brinsea. I can still put the f3 generation olive eggers in tomorrow for the holiday hatch. Everyone loves it. My dear daughter was really jonesing for a fluffy.
Well, I wish I had washed mine. I traditionally set eggs in the brinsea to hatch on/around Easter Sunday. This year it was silkie show girls from 2 different ebay people. The first set arrived beautifully packaged but filthy. I wanted to wash them, but restrained myself. The second arrived...
My f2 OEs are laying now. I will keep two of the cockerals to hatch in the spring. My original crosses hatched were Crested Cream Legbar x Welsumer and Ameraucana x Birchen Marans. This generation is those two crosses bred and produced hens with light green to dark khaki some with freckles. I...
It has been single digits in the days and way colder at night, which is unheard of for more than a few hours here, let alone 2 weeks. I have a panel heater in the coop roof and 6 heat lamps in the 25x25 run with one in the coop. We still had 3 freeze to death last night. They were the three...
Hey Butterfly girl,
I am in Northern Westchester county NY. I hatched 13 olive eggers 2 weeks ago if you want some. I also have about 30 3-5 month old Ameraucanas and leghorns as a chicken friend of mine broke his hip just after starting his flock. I took them home to my place as he will be in...
The problem is, in short order their breasts are too big for them to be able to walk more than a step or two. They have been selectively bread for exactly this genetic trait. I don't think you can manipulate the growth rate. Sorry! I would call the store. Generally, if they have one they will...
They can recover surprisingly well. I had a 5 week old leghorn chick that had the whole top of her head pecked bloody. You could literally see the skull in a nickel sized hole. It healed up with a bald spot scar and she lived for several years, perfectly happy. Good luck!
