A Raven just killed the chicks

I have a broody Barred Rock who sat on eggs for 2 stretches of 21 days (her first set didn’t make it - she got off the babies while they pipped and they got shrink wrapped). So, we gave her 2 more fertilized eggs and she hatched them. Today, everyone was happy and then we saw a raven in the...

Can eggs shrink wrap under a hen?

Same - when I checked, the baby had died and half of its body was shrink wrapped. I think she got off the hatching egg, ran outside for a poop, and came back too late. She was sitting on it when I checked but it was clearly dead but still warm and floppy.

Shrink wrapped under a broody hen😔🥲

I just had this too. Broody hen had 4 eggs under her. All died at various stages except one. It made it almost all the way out of the shell but was shrink wrapped and died. She, currently, has 3 live eggs under her - due May 24. Is there anything I can do to boost the humidity in a drier...

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

That's a good idea. I will - because the powders are banned for chickens, here in Canada (or so I've been told when I was searching for it). Maybe it is still available in a nursery, like you've suggested. The flock got completely doused, as above, and I sprayed the heck out of every nook...

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

Doktor Doom is the insecticide. We sprayed all the chickens under their wings, around their tail and vent and down their backs...massaged it all in; as per the instructions. Then it said to repeat by spraying over top them in 7 days. We have 6 Isa Browns - who all had a bad lice load when we...

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

I sprayed all the birds and their coop - all nooks and crannies. I sprayed all birds around their vents, under wings and down back...we have no powders to dust here in Canada. Next I'll lightly spray them in a couple days and see how they are. I also wormed them all - know knows what they...

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

I think she has been the one who laid weird shaped eggs, soft shells, etc. I will see how she is in the morning. She's been sleeping nicely in the garage (we have heated floors which she seems to like). But she is smelly. Tomorrow, I'll give her another sitz bath and check her vent, delouse...

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

She looks rather lethargic (or lonely) tonight. She ate freeze dried meal worms happily but now looks "blah" This isn't good news! Darn! I'm running to the feed store tomorrow to see what they have. I have a premise ID number so I can buy vet stuff for my animals. I have neem oil but am...

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

I just read that article and if she is not feeling well in the morning it seems like the most humane thing to do is put her down

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

Yes - in between her legs/in front of her vent it is swollen but not hard...kind if like jelly-ish feeling.

Lice and mites - the struggle is real!

We're in full swing of winter here in Alberta, Canada! This morning I noticed that one of my older hens was walking like a penguin (chest up and butt way down) so I brought her in, gave her a warm Epsom salt bath and noticed she was infested with lice (and she had the eggs clumping on the base...

    Newbie Hobby Farmer Here!

    1) We are new to everything farming - having moved from the city to the country...12 hours away from where we were raised. 2) We have 6 chickens 2 pullets and one cockerel 3) Our chickens are Isa browns - from an egg farmer who got in over his head with too many chickens. He was selling them...

She prefers goats over her own kind...

Good idea - I didn't notice I posted where I did...it seems to be the default spot on my phone when I hit the icon to ask a question and I'll pay more attention to that in the future! We moved the chicken to the coop today because feeding her became impossible - the goats seemed to get fatter...
