I have a hard time seeing movement on the bird so I gently slide my fingers down the feathers. I can then see movement on my fingers.
Northern Fowl Mites are horrible!
Sorry for your loss Ron. They hide things so well, but I still feel bad when I miss things, even genetic. The 2 Basque hens I have have very poor sight, they are in with my old mellow rocks but it was a scary introduction.
At least she got special pampering and compassion in her passing.
I am involved with 4-H, the exhibition Rocks are in the Open class birds. The Barred were bigger than the Whites I've seen up close.
I've only seen parti pullets at the very few shows I've been to and they looked to be hatchery birds in large fowl. The bantams looked much closer to SOP.
I...
I have a hatchery partridge rock, she is much smaller than an exhibition bird. Her coloring is brassy in the cape and the penciling is mossy. The leg color is off also.
Even with all her faults she is one of my favorites and will go broody in the spring.
I would love to find some show birds...
29° outside now, they are saying we will be getting more snow before we get rain. Roads are already sheets of ice. One of the few times living in town would be OK.
We were without power for 13 hours. By the time this storm blew over we got 16 inches of snow. Since they plowed the roads we have an inch of packed snow/ice. It took me 45 minutes to drive the 13 miles to work. Never driven with chains before, they work well.
Old hens are goofy! I considered it a Christmas miracle when I got a egg on the 24th from my 7 year old hens. Today I got 2 eggs. We have 8 inches of snow on the ground and 36 was our high temp today. I guess they are enjoying the greenhouse plastic I wrapped the runs with.
Are you doing just a few or many?
I've done dozens and I use a dremel and syringe. The Dremel to open the holes and the syringe to extract the liquids.
What we did with them:
It is a Mookie, they are my best parents. They have 2 new babies they hatched yesterday. Unlike the Parlour and Modena that have yet to successfully hatch anything.
Working on new lofts to see if that will help.
