Just looking to try something different. I now have hatched more than enough bobs for dog training this year, so I have the itch to try something different. Anything I need to know? Is it pretty much the same as bobwhites?
Personally, I feed Prince Gamebird 28% their whole lives, but then I raise them for dog training, so the lifespan isn't longer than about 15 weeks or so. Birds I keep over winter to be breeders the next spring are fed the same all winter. I have no idea how Pince compares to other brands. It...
Here we go again. 120 bob eggs in the bator, the other bator is locked down, and due to hatch tomorrow. 6 week old chicks in brooder went out in the new johnny house. The cycle continues. lol An empty bator or brooder is a rare thing around here these days.
@Fat Daddy When they get older they spend quite a bit of time on the perches. The chicks in there are 6 weeks old. They seem to be content to covey on the floor at this point. My other johnny house has 14 month old adults. They only go on the floor to feed.
Training my Llewellin Setters.
The reason I got into hatching and raising them was I was tired of searching high and low every year to find training birds. I've learned that hatcheries are some of the most unreliable and dishonest people there are.
Sure thing. It's nothing fancy. Just a 4x8 box. Feed/water on one end, a compartment for a dust bath on the other end. Perches up top. The ends are actually hinged to be used as doors, as shown in the pics. You can google "phantom quail kennel". It's a variation of theirs, without the recall...
I hear ya Fat Daddy. I filled my second bator last night. I'll collect eggs until the first clutch hatches and set some more. There's something about an empty bator that just eats away at a person.....
When my layers are done for the year I might buy some Gambel or Chukar eggs to hatch just...
70 bobs in one bator, 50 eggs and counting from my layers. I plan to set again next week in my other bator. Hatched 75 bobs last week, hatched 60 on Easter. ugh. up to my neck in bobs. At least my pup will get plenty of training.
Thanks for the response! Definitely good info here.
We did have a drastic weather change from the time I set them to lockdown. We went from cold with the furnace running, dry in the house, to warm and rainy, and the humidity in my Hovabator going sky high. I wondered if that had anything to...
I usually put them in around 6-8 weeks of age, depending on weather.
I don't use it as a recall pen, being I train on public land. Wisconsin doesn't allow recalling on public land. I have a few friends who use them to recall, and they work very well.....until a raccoon or fox finds them...
