Cheese. They love cheese. Our birds free range all day. A little shredded cheese in the coop is their "bedtime snack". We walk to the coop with the bag of cheese and in they come :)
Frustration is setting in. 3 Brahma hens (1.5 years old) that were laying consistently until the super hot temps of the Texas summer. Now we get nothing. Two months of nothing. I have introduced oyster shell. We feed Layena crumbles. Occasional treats of fresh veggies. Fresh water in...
Buy 4 toddler gates. The kind that you use to keep children from leaving a room or falling down stairs. You will also need a container of large cable ties (in the electrical aisle at your home improvement store).
The first time you do this you will need some help but after that it is easy...
Not unusual. In my opinion they went through the heat of summer without laying and now that they are old enough to start laying, the winter months are setting in. Temperature/climate changes have a lot to do with production. Be patient and take a few minutes to check the yard if they are free...
Instead of just waiting to see what happens try putting her in an area by herself. If she has an illness you don't want her to spread it to your other hens. Cook her something warm to eat that she really likes (scrambled eggs work well). Get her electrolites up by having her drink some...
To go container from local restaurant containing fried rice, corn, and green beans. AND.... 3 big water bugs that had the nerve to move into the coop for the winter. Silly "dead" bugs.
I agree with ruth. Rinse eye with saline and put Neosporin in the eye. I would recommend two or three times a day.
Keep separate from other birds for her own protection.
Feed her something that she really enjoys. My girls love scrambled eggs when they aren't feeling good.
Keep her...
Our three girls sing every morning but don't lay until afternoon. It gets so loud sometimes that my husband swears one of them must be a rooster. NOT!! Silly man!!
And..what about the constant running in and out of the coop like they don't know if it is time to lay an egg or maybe it can...
Still no egg from Maude. This is my morning so far....
1. Wake up to sqauwking Maude.
2. Go to coop and Maude is pacing.
3. Maude runs in coop and sits in nesting box.
4. Two minutes later she comes out and paces again.
5. I let the other two hens out to free range but Maude doesn't want...
Sharon,
Thank you for your help this morning. Everything that you described is exactly what my girls have been doing. No doubt in my mind now that our first eggs will be arriving soon. Maude seems to have settled down a little, although no egg. I just love BYC. Everyone is always so...
