Thank you, Azygous. That sounds like good advice to me. I hadn't heard of a chicken's comb and wattle being affected by molt, so I assumed there must be something else going on. She has been enjoying the scrambled eggs and seems to have more energy now. She has always been our healthiest hen...
One of our 2 1/2 year old Lohmann Brown hens didn't look right to me a few days ago so we brought her in the garage to monitor. Her comb and bottom edges of her wattle are a bit greyish and dry and she's not as energetic as usual. Her appetite also seems poor and as a result she's not pooping...
Thank you for your insights, Debbie292d. I suppose 35 weeks isn't that young anymore in bird terms!
I know one of the older hens is a bully, for sure, and one other that might be when we're not watching. I had wondered about isolating at least the worst one, so we'll give that a try.
We...
Hello! We have four 2 1/2 year old hens who all arrived together when we first became chicken keepers. One of them is currently in quarantine within the run, but is ready to join her flock mates. One was in quarantine, but has already rejoined the other two a couple weeks ago. She is clearly...
Update: the vet did a fecal culture and found coccidia. We have been medicating all our birds for two weeks now and will do a thorough cleaning of their coop and run this weekend, replacing the mulch substrate with sand. Our quarantined hen is much improved - alert, energetic, and anxious to...
Thank you, Swamphiker, for your reply. I have suspected reproductive issues. We have lost two other hens in the past year to reproductive tumors. I will monitor for one more day and then have her euthanized by the vet if there is no improvement. I can't bear to see an animal suffer.
Hello, I have a 2 1/2 year old Lohmann Brown laying hen. She has been doing poorly the past 4 days. She is quite emaciated, labored breathing, walking upright, almost tipping over backward, neck hunched, eyes dull and half shut. She is eating (ravenously, if it's scrambled egg) and pooping...
I have the same quandary. We gave tetracycline to our laying hens last year on the vet’s advice. Ever since their eggs have had thinner shells, or have been broken immediately upon laying, or the hens have stopped laying altogether. I can’t be sure if it’s due to the tetracycline or if it’s just...
I can see your photos. I would check the base of their feathers near that poky tip by the tail for mites. They may be pulling feathers due to parasites. Or if you’re not finding the feathers they’re pulling they may be eating them to get more protein.
I’m not sure what drops you mean. I did find a 0.20% permethrin-based Tick and flea spray for cats
https://www.petland.ca/products/zodiac-dual-action-flea-tick-spray-for-cats-236-m
They are on a 17% layer feed with no more than 10% greens and a tablespoon of yogurt occasionally.
I’m not aware of any ivermectin based flea products here. The vet said flea collars wouldn’t get to the vent area.
We have 8 hens in an 8’ x 10’ coop at night, with free access to a 200 sq ft run during the day. Lots of toys and things for them to climb on for boredom.
Even the vet can’t get permethrin here. I don’t know what the large poultry producers use. Trying to find out.
We know the DE is a poor...
We have 8 lohmann brown layers that we got last April when they were 17 weeks old. They recently looked like they were going through a moult, but then their necks began balding, followed by their breasts and undersides, and now near their vents. The bald patches appear to have had the feathers...
We are in Canada, and it has been around -28°C (-40°C with the wind chill) for the past week. We have kept our lohmann browns in the coop during this cold snap, and with two heaters it is still -12°. We have a heater in their waterer too, but the nipples are metal so they still freeze up. We...
