    Scratch as feed?!

Just food for thought. Winter is coming and FAT chickens can survive in the cold better than skinny ones. I think that right now during the fall it is good to "over feed" (if that is even possible) is good. I am feeding mine everything they will eat because I think this is going to be a...

    Raw meat and chickens

Feeding raw meat to chickens can make them more carnivorous then they already are. I was always told if your going to feed them meat, cook it. I had a dog that I fed raw meat to and he became very blood thirsty. when I started cooking any meat he got he calmed down.

    My chicken coop stinks

I use white lime, hydrated I think it is called. Put it down lightly before you put the straw or wood chips down. You don't want a layer of it just a light dusting. I also dust on top of the droppings under the roost if I don't get to the cleaning quick enough. I have never noticed any...

    Scratch as feed?!

OK, Horsefeathers, then why did my family raise chickens for YEARS all the time feeding them Scratch feed and table scraps. Scratch feed has cracked corn, wheat and barley and if you add some oats then they have plenty of nutrition. We never lacked for eggs and the chickens did NOT free range...

Do you trap all the time?

Easier way is to put an electric fence up. Raccoons will hit an electric fence, run off and never return. Promise.!

    Scratch as feed?!

Scratch feed IS GOOD for chickens. It is ALL natural grains. Nothing added that I know of. The "experts" can say what they want but WHAT DID THEY FEED CHICKENS BEFORE THE MAN GROUND STUFF ADDED FEED WE CAN BUY TODAY???? Scratch feed. There is nothing wrong with feeding it to the chickens...

    My chicken coop stinks

You need to clean out your chicken house then dust with lime and add new straw or wood chips as you wish. The lime does not hurt the chickens and it will "sweeten" the smell. Use it in the run too. My family used lime all the time and never had any problem with smell. You do have to clean...

sm black bugs in feed. Okay?

Bugs in the feed is NOT good. Bugs are good for chickens and they like them but bug droppings in the feed can cause problems. Take the feed back to where you got it and demand your money back.

When do I bring out the heat lamp??

If you make sure your coop is pretty tight and has some insulation in it heat lamp isn't necessary and it is a waist. If you put a real thick layer of straw on the floor and make sure you change the water for hot water at least once a day, twice if you have time, your chickens will do fine...

    Killing Mosquitoes?

I got a email about Listerine keeping mosquitoes away. I'm one of those who will get bit by the one bug and 100 people. Tried the listerine. Spray it around and they leave. If I am up in the woods and spray listerine on me and around I don't get bit. Worth a try and a lot cheaper than other...

    coyote in the driveway!!

A 17 HMR does a great job of downing coyotes and many other pests and not to expensive. Also, for anyone out at night looking for predators A good strong flashlight with a RED lens shows the eyes really well at night but doesn't scare the critter away as quickly. Someone said they can't see...

Something is stiffin' round my coop at night.

IF it is a coon and If you put up an electric fence around your chickies inclosure about a couple inches off the ground the coon will eventually get a nasty shock and will never return. Had trouble with coons in Austin, yes IN the city. Animal control told me to put up and electric fence. The...

    WORST unknown mystery predator ever!

High voltage electric fence set close to the ground and one above it. You might have a weasel problem too. Electric fence will fend off most of those critters. Steady on not pulsing. two wires one close the ground but not touching and one 3-4 inches above it. Tractor supply has all that...
