Wow! That's quick... I have a flock of 14 and momma freaks out when they come close to the brooder. We've be deluged with rain/storms but today is gonna be a great day!
Not sure if there's a way to encourage her to leave the brooder. Maybe if I pick up their chick feed she'd take them out...
Thanks for sharing!
A couple questions... How old are the chicks? How long did they stay out?
I have a protective new momma with 2.5 week old chicks and they haven't ventured out yet, but I'm really looking forward to seeing them out & about!
That's hilarious! The video you shared doesn't have sound, unfortunately. I'm not sure if you can reshare with sound? LOL
The only advice I'd offer (based on my first brood) is to keep treating the area for mites 😬. I left my hen alone when treating the rest of the coop and didn't realize...
Oh my goodness -- Unbelievable that ALL 7 of those I posted were fertile and hatched!
THANK YOU BirdsBeesTrees for telling me to keep them all -- I'm so happy I didn't toss them. As a first-timer with a hatch, I was really unsure! They all hatched in the last 24 hours... at day 20. So YAY for...
Day 16 here - I tried to candle on Day 10, but my flashlight wasn't working quite right. This is with an actual Candler. My guess is 1 and 7 are bad and probably 5. Am I reading these right? Thanks for your help - 1st time doing this!
If you see the picture I posted, the nest is a few inches off the ground - I worry that the little ones could fall out out not be able to get back in.
I do have some mesh to put around the pen, thanks for bringing that to my attention!
I'm sure every circumstance is different and I'm looking for ideas and help. This broody is very committed! Which is why I decided to let her hatch some on her own. Being at Day 16, I'm mostly worried about the new chicks and their survival. The nest area doesn't seem safe for the babies and...
I have a large coop that will fit the dog pen in the same area she's sitting. Most of the hens are laying elsewhere, it's just the one Nekid Neck that keeps pushing her out. She takes her break first thing in the morning to eat/drink/run around. I can open the crate at night and then close up in...
I've read a ton but found conflicting information, including your answer which is different from the first article in this thread, that you previously reviewed and said it was a 'great article' filled with 'first class info'... which is it? Move her and protect her and the chicks or "do no...
I could use some help with my first broody! She's sitting on 7 eggs and we are on Day 15. I'm confused about what to do next. She's in the favorite nest box and other hens continue to push her out. I've read that's bad... I'll move her tomorrow.
I candled the eggs with a flashlight and...
What an amazing story! I saved your video, just in case. My hen is sitting on a clutch right now, day 15 - my first hatch... I'm just trying to gain what knowledge I can, this whole thread was enlightening. Thanks for sharing it.
