    To anyone still interested in this issue, it turns out that the R3 zoning doesn't apply for some reason. I emailed a city official and he said I'm good to go with my chicken coop! Thanks for all the help.

    Yes, I'm sure I can do that, but if I'm not technically allowed to do it, I may be tempted to do it anyway and hope no one complains. If that's the case, I'd rather not be on their radar. Maybe that's stupid. . . .I don't know.
