    Introducing a new hen

Yeah that is the problem I think. Different people tell us different things. The farmer we got the sheep from, all their sheep under 6 months old wear jackets. We live in a super cold area. I'm not sure about the space and exactly how much we need. We built the stall 8x8, then there is the run...

    Introducing a new hen

Nearly two months later... I wanted to give an update on the homestead situation, it's been a wild ride! Our hen is doing great. She follows us everywhere, and goes home to roost at night. The past few days have been quite cold though (below freezing), and she's not liking it much. We decided...

    Introducing a new hen

If I were you, I'd definitely make sure there is a way back, in case it doesn't work out with the new hen. I think some pecking is normal, each time there is a new bird in the coop, they have to establish the pecking order. But, in my case, the new hen was just attacking my old girl constantly...

... and her hooves trimmed. We're not too worried about that, the person we got her from will come and do that.

    Introducing a new hen

Think it through carefully :) Just today... I made plans to go away for the day on Tuesday until I remembered oh, the sheep.... Can't leave her out here by herself all day. It's a commitment... and some extra work. I noticed I'm cleaning her sleeping area every night, change her water twice a...

    Introducing a new hen

No need anymore, we took the new hen back to where she came from :)

    Introducing a new hen

Ok trying.. Here's Susie, the sheep, and Annie, our good old girl :)

    Introducing a new hen

Careful what you wish for :) The sheep is actually still a lamb, 4 months old. Is it possible to upload a picture right from my computer, or do I have to host it somewhere?

    Introducing a new hen

oh no, no more :) The sheep is adjusting nicely, and I think the hen is better off by herself. She comes running when we call, and she is very much at ease now. We spend as much time with her as we possibly can. I wish we hadn't gotten the sheep and had thought this through a bit more carefully...

    Introducing a new hen

Well, it turned into a drama :( The new hen was bullying our old hen BIG time. Even when they were on opposite sides of the run, she'd run to her and peck her. We ended up keeping the new hen in the run and letting the old hen free range. We had to police them during roosting time, let the old...

    Introducing a new hen

We put two waterers out, one in the run and one in the coop. There is plenty of food in both, the coop and the run. I think they're doing pretty good so far.

    Introducing a new hen

So far so good. They both went to the roosting spot without a fight, though they are still totally ignoring one another :)

    Introducing a new hen

Haha not really :) I think we might have gone a bit overboard with keeping the chicken happy. I still wonder how long the new hen needs to stay in the run before we let her free range... would a couple days be enough?

    Introducing a new hen

Thanks for the reply :) So far the hens seem to ignore one another. The new one is in the coop and the old one is in the run. Unfortunately I have to work today and can't keep a real close eye on them (I work from home and check now and then), but tomorrow my husband and I are both off, and...

    Introducing a new hen

Hello, I have a question :) We've had chickens for years, but in the past year, they started to die of old age. We gave them all a proper burial, and now we are down to one old hen. After doing some research, turns out a single hen can get lonely and stressed. We really don't want chickens...
