They really are some smart mofos

Lol, no doubt. I have an opening in the run that I cover with chicken wire. The opening is about 20" wide. I'll walk them from the coop over to the opening and 2 or 3 will go in while the rest of them run along the fence trying to figure out how to get inside! They probably run the length of the...

Just want to bi@%h about my roo

Being a chef I had a little something up my sleeve, however the kiddies won out on re-homing him. Kids:1 Stomach:0 😞

They really are some smart mofos

So while I'm in the process of building my coop, I'm still able to house them in it. It's located in front of my barn while the run is behind the barn. For the past week, I hand carry the ladies (8wks old) to the run and then back to the coop before it gets dark. Last night, the wife and I were...

Just want to bi@%h about my roo

Thanks everyone. Due to zoning, I'm unable to have a roo so I'm not too tore up over having to get rid of him. Hopefully the hens will get some peace soon.

Just want to bi@%h about my roo

So my roo is 8wks old and he is starting to pick on the hens. The flock consists of 6 hens and 1 roo, all Sapphire Gems, all 8wks old. A couple of days ago I noticed about a dz different feathers on the coop floor. (Coop is 4x8). I couldn't find any bald patches on any of the hens so I assume...

    Are my roosts too high?

Thanks everyone. I went out there at dusk and put one on the roost. Within a minute, the 2 darker ones flew up to it and stayed there while the other one jumped down. Just checked on them and there are 4 up there now and the others are just piled atop the roo.

    Feeder or let them dig?

My sapphires did the same thing. I just tied it up a few inches off the floor and that solved the problem. The cord prevented them from flying up and getting on top of it.

Kicked them out of the brooder

Right? He acts like he's in charge...at least till I show up. Then he hides behind the hens, lol. Of course, when the dog shows up, he's front and center. He gets pissed when I take all the hens out of the run and he's the last one left. He just stands there making weird noises...then he makes...

Kicked them out of the brooder

So I kicked my 7wk old gals/guy out of the broader 3 days ago. They seem to be digging their new condo. In about a week or 2 I'll have to get rid of the roo (town ordinance).

    Are my roosts too high?

I should add they are 7wks old and they like to sleep in a pile together on the floor. Even when I had roost bars in the breeder (6" off the ground), they wanted to sleep on the floor.

    Are my roosts too high?

My bars are 28" off the ground...more like 24" because of the 4" straw bed. There is 24"+ of space above the bars. The girls have been in their new home for 2 nights now yet they refuse to use the roost bars. Any ideas?

Did a roo sneak by? Sapphire Gem, 4 wks

Thanks for the pics! I have one that has barring, but there definitely wasn't a white spot on it as it was completely dark grey so I'm pretty sure that one is a hen.

Did a roo sneak by? Sapphire Gem, 4 wks

Yeah, it came from Hoovers Hatchery and they were all labeled as pullets. If the pros missed it, I guess it is what it is. Due to zoning, I can't have a roo so it'll have to go. I'll give it a few more weeks just to see though. He/she is on the plank (small wings).
