    ideas for a “green” run

We put chicken wire around the base of a shrub similar to what we do to keep the deer away from young saplings. It worked great and eventually we were able to remove the wire and trim the red tip photinia to create a small shady area.

    egg burst inside chicken???

One of my hens seems to have the same thing that you described in this thread last year. It seems that the egg must have not had a shell, but just the soft membrane. You said you posted on FB and got some advice about what to do. Do you mind sharing what you did and whether or not it helped...

Sour Crop and Apple Cider Vinegar

I know this thread is several years old, but the information is still relevant so I am writing here hoping to learn more. I have a hen with sour crop and tried the different treatments recommended here and she is improving but still not well 4 days later. Her crop seems to be emptying and not...

Necropsy - Not Egg bound - What else could it be?

Thank you so much! I didn't even know where to begin to look and that helped a lot. I found pictures online of egg yolk peritonitis and that is definitely what it had to be. Her insides were completely full of this stuff but her intestines seemed empty. I have read several different articles...

Necropsy - Not Egg bound - What else could it be?

One of my hens had symptoms of being egg bound. I tried everything recommended online but she died so I decided to see how many eggs were in there since her abdomen was so firm and full and yet there was not meat on her breastbone. To my surprise, there were no eggs at all but she was FULL of...

Hen with hard abddomen and very lethargic

Two nights ago one of my hens slept on the coop floor rather than the roost. I did not expect her to survive the night, but when she did I tried to find the problem and I noticed her lower abdomen is very firm and her breastbone is protruding (meaning, not much meat on her). She is a small...

Quail raised in a pasture pen?

I see it has been several years since you posted with a question about raising quail in a pasture pen so you should have a lot of experience by now. Did you ever give it a try? Do you still raise quail and if so, do you have any tips for someone just starting out? I have an old rabbit hutch...

    Extreme Drop in Egg Production

I'm glad you "hi-jacked", maybe it will bring attention back to my problem that is still ongoing. As for your situation, the feathers indicate they are molting and yes, they do stop egg production during molts. I'm not sure how long it lasts, though. I've had chickens for four years and if...

    Extreme Drop in Egg Production

If I remember right, I only set the timer once but it seems like the days weren't that short when I started....maybe in September. I aimed for 15 hours of light (including sunlight). There evidence of one or two hens molting now. It would be wonderful if that's all it is, but it really seems...

    Extreme Drop in Egg Production

Yes, I live in the Houston area and it is hot now, but the low production started early last fall and has never picked up. I kept a light on a timer throughout the winter but that didn't work. And even though our winters are mild, I had hoped once spring was here things would change, but it...

    Extreme Drop in Egg Production

Yes, I have checked underneath the bedding and it all seems clean. Also, I checked the nest boxes several times each day for the past two days to see how many eggs were there throughout the day and at the end of the day. There were three each day and I even left the first three there all night...

    Extreme Drop in Egg Production

I am very confident that the raccoons are not an issue. As far as eggeaters -- I don't see any evidence...the nests seem clean and there are no eggshell fragments. I guess I could borrow someone's trail-cam and set it up in the coop to see if that tells me anything. Any other ideas?

    Extreme Drop in Egg Production

They are confined to a large run attached to their coop which is converted from one of the horse stalls in our barn. The only predators we have battled are hawks and raccoons, but we haven't had any run-ins for over a year. The younger hens are varying ages from 1 1/2 - 2 yrs (we have younger...
