I absolutely LOVE my Turkens!! I will always have them now. But I will look for a heritage line that isn't crossed with anything.
They do well with a perch that is 2" to 4" off the ground (or inside a smaller coop). We started with about 6" up in the coop when they were under about 12 weeks...
Thanks for your expertise.
I only got a couple of glimpses at the banded chick, and I've always thought it was mis-identified. They were shipped to El Paso TX in May with a heat pack, and missed the DAILY truck to my town by an hour. They spent 23 hours at a USPS hub.
Dehydration, heat...
What a precious baby - please post updates?
I currently have 2 buff orpington mixes (BO roo, silver leghorn or game hen, and 2 black sexlinks that all lay eggs that color:confused:
Breed: Mottled Cochin bantams
Hatchery
Age: 20 weeks tomorrow (May 5th hatch date, in case I can't math.)
Ordered: 3♀️, 1♂️ - the male was banded.
- 10 other chicks ordered
We lost 4 total, including 1 Cochin.
My partner removed the band IDing the male within the 1st 6 hrs, certain he could ID...
These Buckeye observations are based on 3 birds. 2 from a hatchery, one fron TSC. FOOD DRIVEN. Holy cow, these girls love food. Great layers, nice big eggs. And sweet! Friendly, cause they're always checking for snacks.
We raised the 2 hatchery girls in a mixed flock from the same hatchery...
Not at all!! You just gave another excuse to take pictures😁.
I do want to apologize- I saw your post on Tuesday - and did not intend to take so long to reply. I did get pictures!!!
In my first post, 1, 4, and 6 are OEG. 1 roo & 2 girls and they are TINY. The standard size hen-floofy-butt in...
#1, the porcelain d'uccle, had that comb at three weeks, and he crowed 2 days ago. He was supposed to be a girl.
#s 3 & 4, the Mille fleur d'uccles, are as they should be, 1 of each, and the cochin ? There's a third that isn't in the picture. Our current guesses are 2 boys 1 girl, but I want to...
These bantams are not quite 7 weeks old - we've been 'discussing' this since I took the pics.
2 mottled cochin, 2 mille fleur, and 1 porcelain d'uccles. 1 has crowed (twice).
This is kinda just for fun - I know the picks aren't the best. This is how I spend Saturday nights.
We've raised 4 sets if babies since March, and ALL of them (roos, pullets, and some unknowns) at some point will chest bump & practice kicking. Some females will gradually slow down on that, but some are pretty spicy!
I think it's pretty normal chick behavior. As for sexing, it depends on...
Thanks - I've gotten a lot of feedback, and done a ton of research. Even if they are Pioneers, those have been crossed, and bred to have stronger bones & legs, and develop more slowly, and be strong enough to continue to mature and lay and breed. An actual pioneer person (or homesteader)...
Thank you. She's always been healthy, and Jason (my partner in chicken madness, codependently supporting each other's chicken math) loves his Houdans, and spots everything. It has happened before, as recently as 2 weeks ago, and last spring when we thought squirrels were breaking/stealing eggs...
We have a flock of 7 hens that turned 3 yrs in April. The 3 poofy heads lay white (1 Polish & 2 Houdan), 2 Faverolles lay brown, 1 Cream Legbar lays blue, and the easter egger lays a light pinkish brown, and I know who lays which egg. (Sorry, bragging on my babies)
3 days ago, (7th) we found...
