    Particles and oddly colored yolk

I've been getting a few eggs like this. I know it is coming from one of my two Rhode Island Reds. Is there something wrong? It had been happening infrequently, however over the last couple of weeks we've been seeing it whenever she lays. The yolk also is not of consistent color. We did find...

    Feather loss on back

I have 2 RIR that are loosing their tail feathers. I have not seen any signs that they are being bullied, also I only have hens. Additionally I rarely find feathers in their coop and run. My 4 RIR are almost a year old. The other 6 hens just turned a year and are Silkie/RIR crosses. If it...

    Polish Chicks Western North Carolina

When will you have Polish available again? I am in Kings Mountain NC, where are you located?

Looking for GLW, SLW, Polish and a Splash Silkie. I live Kings Mountain NC, near the SC line.

I would like to find chicks ready for the coop and am willing to drive a reasonable distance to pick up. Any suggestions? Also I already have 4 RIR (14wks) and 6 Silkie/RIR cross (18wks). Thoughts on adding a Polish and Silkie to the mix?

Things you've learned while building your coop...

Adding an old mailbox makes great storage for hand sanitizer and wipes. Especially good if you have kids that like to play with the chickens.

    Silkie/RIR cross

Does anyone out there have any experience with silkie/rir crosses? `I am new to chickens and had said that I thought silkies were adorable but I also wanted rir because they were such good layers. My daughter solved that by getting some cross bred chicks and she and the granddaughter raised...

    Hard Clay Dirt in Run

We use sand over our NC clay. The girls love scratching around and dirt bathing in it and it's also very easy to clean. Poop dries out quickly making for clean feet.

    Predator and sand question

We used hardware cloth when we built our coop and run. The hardware cloth was extended out two feet all around the structure. Sand then went down both in the run and coop.
