We use sand over our NC clay. The girls love scratching around and dirt bathing in it and it's also very easy to clean. Poop dries out quickly making for clean feet.
We used hardware cloth when we built our coop and run. The hardware cloth was extended out two feet all around the structure. Sand then went down both in the run and coop.
