    Do you know the breed?

These young Roos came home with my son this past spring as the end result of a science project. They both have beards like an Americuana, but I don't know the breed. Any ideas?

What time do chickens lay eggs??

Our hens love grass clippings or soft pine needles in the nesting boxes! They kick out straw and wood shavings.

Ended Contest #7 Most Striking Domestic MALE Fowl Contest 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

This is Santa, an Arancana standard size. Not sure of his exact age, but I believe he is under two years old. The second photo was NOT an organized fight, just a quick disagreement with one of the hens. I really liked how the picture turned out. Santa is really a good protector and very gentle...

    Best breed of Rooster

My son's rooster, Rudy, was killed earlier this week by two large nasty dogs. We would like another rooster, but are unsure the best breed. Rudy was a mixed breed. I'd like a roo that is not aggressive toward people or pets. Any suggestions?

    Should we be concerned?

As far as I know -haven't checked recently. I figure if she is eating and drinking and passing waste, has good color, I'll leave her be. If she was egg bound, wouldn't she have died by now ( or given birth to a live chick)

    Should we be concerned?

So, it's been some time since my original post. The hen is eating and drinking. Feathers are dry around the vent and she is passing waste. She tends to wander away from the flock and avoids the rooster altogether. To the best of our knowledge, she has not laid an egg and her abdomen still feels...

    Should we be concerned?

Okay, I felt around inside the hen and she does have an egg in there. I gave her a warm bath this morning which she seemed to enjoy (I was surprised). She even seemed to enjoy being blow dryed. Go figure. At any rate she is resting in a crate in our kitchen. No egg yet, but she has eaten about...

    Should we be concerned?

My son has a year old hen who has become lethargic. She is drinking, but not eating. Her abdominal area feels hard and she has matted feathers around her vent. She dscharged clear liquid while we were cleaning the vent area. She is currently in a cage by herself with plenty of food and water, a...

    Massive sore under her wings

We had a similar injury with one of our hens- two deep slices under the wing, no bleeding, no sign of infection. My son and I washed the wounds with warm water and applied bag balm for a day or two. She continued to run with the flock w/o any negative side effects. She also ate well and laid...

    Introduction

When we moved into the country a year and a half ago, the first thing our 12 year old son asked for was chickens. Seemed like a good project for a middle school student. After all, there are far worse things he could be doing, right? This was the website I referred him to for research and coop...
