Hen passed - graphic necropsy pic - help me figure out what this is?

They only got scratch in the evenings in the winter just before being locked up for the night. I would throw out a couple of handfuls for 10 chickens (9 hens (now 8), 1 roo). Since this girl got sick, I've quit giving any to the remaining birds. Just wanted to add, I'm not in particularly...

Thank you for the kind sentiment. I feed them Country Companion Layer pellets from Cal Ranch.

Hen passed - graphic necropsy pic - help me figure out what this is?

I did slice open a number of them, and no sign of yolks or anything cheesy-ish, the fluid was quite translucent. I am very soft hearted and love my critters (chickens, dogs, and horses), but once they're gone, I want to try and figure out if it's something I can prevent in the future. Thanks...

Hen passed - graphic necropsy pic - help me figure out what this is?

I posted yesterday for help with my 3 year old Australorp that had a sour/impacted crop. Unfortunately she passed away this morning, and after crying for the loss, I did my best to do a necropsy to figure out what went wrong. She had these fluid filled sacs with veins low in her abdomen. Her...

Hen recovering from sour/impacted crop - trying to get her better and gain weight

Well unfortunately, she died in my arms while I was massaging the oil. I hope I didn't hurt her, but she was quite weak at this point. When I quit crying, I'm going to try to open her up and see what's going on.

Hen recovering from sour/impacted crop - trying to get her better and gain weight

Thank you - she won't drink on her own at this point, so I assume I should give it to her via syringe? And put the grit in her mouth? I'm thankful I work from home so I can work with her. Thank you for your help.

Hen recovering from sour/impacted crop - trying to get her better and gain weight

Well this morning her crop was still full. I brought her inside to clean her butt and took some pictures to show her poop. While blow drying her, she started to regurgitate. I helped her and took a picture of what came out, and it smells bad again. I pulled out the monistat and gave her a...

Hen recovering from sour/impacted crop - trying to get her better and gain weight

Thank you - yes her crop seems pretty empty in the morning. I fed her far more today than I've been able to up to this point and her crop is very full tonight. I'll definitely check it in the morning. Each night I worry that this will be the night she passes, and then get hope back when I see...

Hen recovering from sour/impacted crop - trying to get her better and gain weight

I apologize in advance that this is a long post. I have an approximately 3 year old australorp that developed an impacted and/or sour crop about 3 weeks ago. We brought her inside and put her in a large dog crate. I read a lot on what to do for her, and we ended up massaging her crop to get...

    Easter egger Roo??

I do love roos, they are magnificent! I'm glad I live out in the country :-) I'll be on the lookout for another EE roo, I'm sure someone around me will eventually have one they want to rehome.

    Easter egger Roo??

Yet another in the long line of 'is this a rooster or pullet?' posts :-) I searched through old ones hoping to make my own best guess, but couldn't really. I bought this chick as a likely/potential roo - the person I bought from said that every one they got with this coloring was a rooster...

Chicken Weed Abatement - Using chickens to mow your weeds! - With Video

I have 7.5 acres, so my flock of 11 (9 hens, 2 roos) can't take care of all the weeds (and most of the acreage is weeks or scrub), but I also have 2 horses, and they do an AWESOME job of breaking up the manure piles for me. It is so funny to watch them move from pile to pile picking out...

Hi to all - I've been lurking a little while and I am really enjoying the site. I got my first chickens a year ago by accident ... I bid on 3 month old pullets at a silent auction but didn't expect to win (no one else bid ) Fortunately they came with the warming light, feeder, waterer, feed...
