Thanks, all! I looked at my calendar and these girls are actually 13 weeks (SLV, Bielfelder, Cuckoo Marans) and 14 weeks (Red Sex Links). They’re starting to red up but I know there’s still a way to go! Thanks for confirming my plan!
My chickens are ~12 weeks and are sleeping on their roost at night. The roosts are higher than the nest boxes. We have five chickens—two red sex-links, a cuckoo marans, a silver laced Wyandotte, and a bielfelder. We have three nest boxes, all covered with plywood.
I was planning on opening one...
Thank you so much for all your help! I just put the chickies to bed for their first night in the coop.
I ended up going with a free standing roost that I can just pull out of the coop for cleaning.
It’s got about 7.5 feet of roost space and is exactly 23 inches high. That places the roosts...
Thanks! I tried to get a better photo of that area. I think the feathers with white are wing feathers—should those be more round on a hen? The saddle feathers are black and they don’t look either round or pointed yet, but I’ll keep an eye on those!

(Please excuse the messy basement and my...
That is a great article! Thanks!!!
The shortest wall of my coop is 41 inches with the ventilation above that. So, if I allow 18 inches of height between the roost and the back ventilation, I can put the roost at 23 inches. I think that can go where my low roosts are in the plan, if I line up...
My family is new to chickens. We bought 5 chicks but are building the coop for 6 chickens. The breeds we got are on the larger side, with the Bielefelder being the biggest. The coop is 4 ft x 6 ft with the 3 nest boxes adding a couple square feet. We’re not going to keep food/water in the coop...
Hi there--
After lurking on this site while planning for chickens and spending the first couple weeks with these babies, I made an account so that I could get some feedback on my coop design.
The 5 chicks are 2-3 weeks old. We have 2 Moyer Brown Hybrids (which other threads on here tell me are...
