It seems like people often talk about chick grit, bantam grit, peacock grit, etc, but at the feed store I've noticed the grit is differentiated by a number (for instance, when I asked for chick grit they pointed me towards the #1 grit). Is this numbering system standard? What number grit...
terrielacy: Normally this is one of my favorite times of the year (I love the rain) but it sure is making it hard to get this project done! Oregon City is nice too...I go down there sometimes just to hit Spicer Brother's produce market and Tony's Fish Market...that ACME cafe at the same...
speckled hen: thats an excellent idea! I could probably get one for free from the PSU bike coop (I'm a student there).
Another thing that I found (for posterity's sake) is that at home depot they sell those baseboard guard thingies in four feet lengths...its a strip of rubber or vinyl thats...
Well, here I am where I didn't want to be, in the rainy season here in the Pacific Northwest with my coop not done! Thankfully its getting close...here's a pic:
The bulk of the house is built and painted, I'm just doing some finishing work. The door/window bits are all in the garage getting...
well thats good to know Since they were acting healthy and they were pooping normal at least some of the time, I wasn't stressing about it too much, but its good to know its normal

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you, but I did want to say that I've been having this same thing happen with my girls (who are 3 and 4 weeks old) as well. Sometimes I almost think they take turns having runny stinky poo, and I'll even see a single chicken make both runny poo and very...
Well, I just finished pulling all my cheese out of its little bundle, and it was awesome! It's a spreadable cheese, and it is very acidic. It almost tastes like there is some lemon juice in it, lol. I'm guessing this is just the tang of the yogurt carrying over to the cheese...perhaps if I...
Well, the spirit of experimentation got the better of me, and I decided to try making the yogurt cheese with half of my first batch
I measured out a quart of the yogurt and tied it up in a bundle, and then proceeded to stand there stupidly holding it over the bowl, trying to decide where to...
After looking over this thread for a couple of days I finally took the plunge and made a batch of yogurt
It was a little tangier than I'm used to, but after I mixed in a heaping spoonful of homemade raspberry jam, it was great!
Honestly, I was just excited by the fact it firmed up and became...
Hurray for spider eating chickens!
Our Gold Laced Wynadotte Lacey has picked up the habit as well except with the very tiny spiders that seem to be all over the room their brooder is in. The little spiders unknowingly lower themselves into the brooder...AND THEIR DOOM!! Lacey pecks them out...
Well, went to Tour De Coups today...it was a blast! I took a bunch of pictures...I'll post them up later after I get them sorted out and resized.

Well, you guys were right, after a few days they stopped picking on each other I guess they finially were done exploring their brooder mates. Its been one week so I figured I should post some new pictures! Also, we just picked up an araucana, which brings us up to 3 chickens (the limit here...
QuailCreekFarm: Thanks for the heads up about the Washington County Fair! I was itchin' for a fair the other day. It looks like it goes Thurs-Sun, is there something in particular you want to see on Sat?
Outer SE Portland here.
Looking forward to the Tour De Coops this Saturday!
We just got our girls last week from the Burns Feed Store out on Orient Dr. and have yet to build a coop for them to eventually move outside to.
I'm excited to attend the tour this weekend!
I also just heard about it this year, so I can't tell you much about previous years, but I did find some photos from last year on this site: http://tinyurl.com/y73zpe There are several, but I found that site kinda hard to get around.
Our girls are...
