We bought 6 beauties 8-12 weeks old from a farm in North Plains, OR. They are adapting well to kennel, coop, shady run, large corral, and today they are enjoying a morning in the tractor, before being invited back to the corral and run. Our 3 older hens are doing pretty well with the new...

Sick chicken for 5 + months

From that stance, it looks like she may have developed water belly. If it was internal laying, she would have become infected and would have passed within weeks. If she is still living, there is a lot of instruction on how to drain water belly to allow them more comfort.

    April 2024 hatch-a-long

oops- is there a new thread for April 2025? I set 12 today in a cheap incubator that i used with success over 3 years ago. Couldn't resist doing an experiment with some BEAUTIFUL store eggs I found yesterday. 4 are dark brown in varied shades, and 8 are blue-green and olive. Organic...

Need help with recurrent pasty butt

Ouch, no pulling, pls! If a poo log starts to gather on feathers i dab it and/or above it with coconut cream which melt fast and the poo slides right off without handling or stressing the chick.

Rooster with Vent Gleet or Prolapse? Please help!

So they are in the Coop much of the day? That would can cause feather-pecking issues. Foraging, access to grit and frequent dustbathing might help. I'd try to spray the vent area with something like Vetricyn or Bactrin, and consider keeping him in a safe kennel when in the coop so they can't...

    Cockereal or Pullet?

I have an OE just like her, whose mom was CCL and the Roo a RIR...but she has some white feathers behind her Legbar Crest. Often hybrids don't have reliable head feather colors. Folks mistake genders on Barred Rocks from the white patch on their head also (male white patch is less distinct and...

Pics of our 5 week old flock!

Oh yes, they do! I can say where is Biscuit, and if she doesn't appear, one of the others will go run her out from behind a bush. Any lower in pecking order appreciate being called by name with positive reinforcement. I sing their names also, while scooping the coop most days, and often 1 will...

Looking for feathered Pullets. Hardy, egg layers - blue, green, white speckled or dark brown egg layers preferred//.but not from inbred flocks please. Oregon

If you have Pullets this Spring, I am looking! I have 3 with a good routine, but the property is happier with more chickens. Large Coop, lots of foraging space, double corral with pond netting and covered perches, covered dustbathing sites, kennel and large tractor for the adjustment period. No...

    Building in a building

Love the size, plenty of space for different level perches and roosts, with poo boards underneath. You may be able to get a metal feed storage garbage can in there also - assuming you won't get condensation? Diamatacious earth, clean, dry sand or ash in the bottom can help keep feed bags dry.

These were production reds, great foragers, flock buddies and very sweet with me. Both died thru reproductive system emergencies. Sorry but I probably will not get a hen again bred for production that shortens their lifespans and causes suffering. Both my Black Jersey Giants (bred for meat and...
