I agree with @Red Mangrove. It sounds like to me something got in the coop and tried to take a chicken and was interrupted. I have taken to shutting up my coop before evening as I've had a raccoon waltz on in and try to steal eggs after sundown. Now I take no chances! So sorry about your...
