Peachicks are hatching now under a brooding Peahen (Mom) (our first). I found the below dosing- is it the same for chicks? Do I just dose the water and put it out for all to drink? Also, should I be dosing them from day one after they come out or wait for them to be days/weeks old?
For 3-5...
When a peahen is deciding on whether or not to set on her eggs, she spends most of the day on the nest and then will leave at night or sporadically during the day. My question is if that interrupts the development of the eggs so much as to make them “bad”?
I am thinking that maybe what I think is them mating…..might be him attempting and she is not following through????? Maybe she just needed a break. I honestly don’t see any other reason. I guess she knows what she’s doing.
Do peahens skip a season? I have a 4 yo hen that has in the past seasons started laying at the end of April/beginning of May. Last year she went broody by the beginning of June and had a clutch of about 13 eggs. So far this season she has not laid one egg. The male has mated with her but still...
Does worming have any affect on egg laying? If I worm my peas now before egg laying starts (probably right before) does that affect the eggs or the hen in any adverse way?
My one chick has made it to five weeks - it has gotten a bit wobbly and does not seem to be too sure footed as when it was younger. I am hoping this is due to all of its feathers coming in and making it a little unbalanced. So it sits more than runs around now.
When does this pass? Also, at...
Well this is first year hatching eggs and decided to let the hen sit, she sat on 13 eggs- in the end I got one chick that I had to take from her to save it. Temp got to be too hot I think. Here is my one chick……
Thanks for posting all this info. I had a chick hatch yesterday under the hen, but she left him out, I guess he couldn’t walk too good. It was over 110 degrees here in AZ, when I finally intervened the chick was lifeless. A long night of water/electrolytes and it is more alert and active-but...
Hello - I have one cock and one hen. The hen is currently sitting on her eggs. My question is more of a “what is your experience” request.
The male has been super attentive to the hen since she started sitting. He has been laying right next to the nest with her all day. He comes out to eat...
Thank you for replying!
She is back in the nest today. She did put the eggs there and yes she covers them a little. Last season I dated eggs and moved them around - this time I tried not to interfere to see if what I was doing was deterring her.
I know that probably half of them will not...
