Lucky! Don’t usually get snow here, just a lot of ice and hail 🤣

it’s going to be raining for most of the next 2 months here. The turkeys seem pretty unbothered, unlike my poor chickens who won’t even step foot outside their sheltered run. They were quite bedraggled after free ranging today. I just have to trust that they’ll seek shelter if they get too soggy.

This hen loves scratching walls and other vertical things. It’s like she thinks she’s foraging or something. None of my other birds do this, it’s just her.

    Gender?

I would like to add onto the imprinting hens bit, as I’ve managed to breed my human imprinted hen. You can trick them into squatting for a person, and then switch for the tom. It can involve a lot of failure, but will work eventually. Alternate option is finding this specific spot under the...

A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I just had a conversation with someone who’d been working with turkeys for a little over a year (not owning them, but helping out on a farm that had some.) and she believed that they drowned in the rain. It’s amazing to me how many people believe that, despite it being so obviously not true...

This little jake was hatched on July 18-19th (so he’s roughly 3 months old.) and he was trying to mate this pool noodle. Never seen 1 that young try before. My big guy put him in his place pretty quickly of course. He was doing it for a minute or so before I got a video. Definitely selling...

    This chicken is not dead

Although I didn’t think he was dead, he sure did look broken. I was genuinely concerned his father (the big old behind next to him) had stepped on him

Official BYC Poll: What’s Your Favorite Thing About Raising Turkeys?

So that’s why the post, and poll options, felt strange and robotic. The fact that this seems to say all turkeys are toms also sucks. Really a shame that they couldn’t have just taken some time to actually write something.

I sold one of my turkeys

She should be fine. It’ll be better for her to have more hens as company anyway, they prefer the company of other hens to toms. Did you raise them since when they were poults? If so, she’s probably human imprinted and your company should be enough. My first turkey was raised solo, and she was...

Is this bumblefoot almost healed? Anything else I should do?

But is it more likely to happen if another bird has bumblefoot too? Chicken Nugget is still with everyone else, I never separated her or my chicken with bumblefoot. the mama had to be separated well her poults were young. Turkeys are brutal to poults that aren’t there’s. They’ve all been...

Is this bumblefoot almost healed? Anything else I should do?

Thank you. I did a deep clean of the coop and run yesterday. The adult birds don’t currently have access to the coop, because they don’t need it, so there’s no dirty bedding. They aren’t in the coop because that’s where I’m keeping the mama, but my two old chickens have a nesting box and...

Is this bumblefoot almost healed? Anything else I should do?

My one year old female heritage turkey, Chicken Nugget, has had bumblefoot for roughly two months now. I started soaking it in epsom salts around a month ago. I soaked it every other day-daily, but never had any luck getting a “kernel” out of her foot. All that happened if I picked off the scab...
