Nmmrc, once my wyandottes started squatting it wasn't a wk or two till they started laying, the rest of my chix are a mix bag so I wasn't really sure how long after the squatting they started, but it's definitely an indicator... They're gonna lay less in the winter tho from what I understand so...
Another winter question here: it's my first winter with the chickens. I built them a coop with an attached, enclosed run, with various roosts in the run and in the coop. From day one they always roosted out in the run. Now it's getting colder and they are still roosting on the outdoor run...
I'm starting to think ahead about my first winter with chickens here in Abq. Anybody have any tips for keeping water from freezing? How important is it to have heat in the coop? .. Anybody put lights on timers to keep egg production up?
Whoops, unless you had some huge compost pile I don't think you'll offend any neighbors. If done right compost actually smells good, like fruity dirt...
I'm in ABQ too, I've got 8 hens, they can get a little loud sometimes but I don't think it's too bad. Roosters on the other hand are very loud at all hours of the day and night... If you did end up with a couple roosters you may notice them crowing around 3mos old or so. At that point it may be...
Starting another batch of FF today with some scratch grains and bubbies sauerkraut. I read above from moomoodiddy not to use a metal spoon to stir the FF. anybody else ever heard of that? Doesn't seem to me like that would matter....
I like western merc on rio bravo/broadway and dans boots and saddle on N 4th st for feeders, treats, meds, etc. I just went by the Oñate mill on south broadway to get feed and scratch, that was a cool experience, it's where they actually mill and bag the grains, pellets, crumbles etc...
Yeah I used bubbies sauer kraut; it's a live culture non pasteurized product... For 3 days or so there was plenty of water above the feed then on the fourth it was all churning and bubbling... Used Purina layena. I think this week I'm gonna head to a local feed mill and jut try again with some...
Yeah I read bubbles was the way to go because of all the live cultures, plus it was nice digging into that sauer kraut myself ;)
Joanmcm, it smelled really awful, I read it should smell tangy and sweet like yogurt. This smelled more like vomit so I knew it was bad. I think my biggest mistake...
Ok, I'll try again with some whole grains and no sauer kraut... I got that idea from a website about fermented feed... I wanted to use butter milk for a starter but here in NM nobody can sell non pasteurized dairy... I will do the cider vinegar though, I think using a starter helps to get things...
Hi all,
I tried my first batch of FF last week with layers crumbles and some bubbles sauer kraut juice as a starter. It was all completely submerged under a few inches of water and I stirred it a couple times a day. Then on the 4th day all the crumbles were floating on the top, lots of bubbles...
Blaundee I'm in the unm area of ABQ, actually have a few neighbors with ducks, geese, chickens etc... It's become the urban fad these days...
I know you definitely dont want your run turning into a swamp but I think on the super hot days wetting it down ools things off a bit... A mister system...
