Thanks~ yes we did dunk momma hen and after a few hours of being picked on by the others while she bawked and searched for her nest and baby she now seems resigned to events and is slowly starting to act chicken like again, preening, scratching and perching on the garden roost so hopefully she...
Well just as I thought it would the little chick passed away in the night! momma hen is soooo confused and I have had to shut her out of the hen house as she is determined to stay sitting the other hens are being spiteful towards her even though she was top hen before going broody~ life can be...
Thanks everyone for all the tips~ I will keep trying with this little one, frankly I am surprised that s/he has lasted this long so maybe its a fighter? fingers crossed it'll make another day x
I'll let you know how it gets on
Wish us luck
Hi MissPrissy, thanks for that advice:) I am really unprepared for any of this as I (mistakenly) thought that a broody hen and eggs would pretty much take care of themselves!
I dont have chiccy vits would "poultry guard" tonic be ok to add?
I will stop adding he honey to the water now as s/he...
We've done the waterer thing several times to no effect so resorted to using a dropper which he took a few sips from then scrabbled back under moms wing, I'll be amazed if this little chick ever makes it but I'm going to keep trying and take it a day at a time
This chick raising plays havoc with...
Yes it sleeps all the time under moms wing I've not seen it eat at all and so far it has only taken honeyed water from a dropper when ever I give it~ not seen it drink by itself :-(
This little chick hatched under my broody on Thursday pm it still can't stand up very well and I am really worried that s/he just won't make it don't know what it is either as the eggshell was missing and it was from a mixed batch any ideas??
Aww thank you for your concern I'm glad your momma hen has had better luck than mine she looks so content with her little chicks
I got some advice from the kind folks on here and now have a little bit of hope for my solitary chick.
I so want my hen to have a reward for all that hard work.
Oh thanks Vicky, i am just hoping against hope that this little one will survive so will do as youv'e said and dunk mum (she won't like it though)
I'm glad you think baby is looking ok! it's sooo tiny and has only taken a few drops of honeyed water since it hatched so it's worrying me half to...
Here is the tiny chick never had a chick before so can anyone tell if it is normal to be this small? it hatched on Thursday night
Vickig~ should my hen be doing more than just sitting like this if so I will dunk her as you advise?
Hi all, well things are not looking good today the liitle chick just stays under her and hasn't taken any food or drink since hatching and looks very immature compared to pictures of 2-3 day olds I've seen on here I suspect he will simply waste away today very sad for my poor hen who is at last...
Oww I hope you are right she's been broody so many times we decided to give her some hatching eggs this time expectingher to be a really good proud momma, maybe she's just dissapointed to have only one baby and not a full brood?
Hi Thankyou she seems to have settled in her new accomodation and the chick has tucked under her and is quiet for now( I assume thats good) I plan to keep them together in the hope that momma will move on and forget those eggs and nurture her lonely little chick like a proper broody hen:fl:fl
