What is the current interest in Barbu de Watermaels?

I have some GF line Watermaels, all roos have perfect 3 point combs. I'm wondering, what would be the most sought after color variations? I currently have 2 roos in the lineup, and 8 hens. Main Roo #1 being: Lighter colored morph. Slightly larger body. 3 point comb. Large comb. Dominant...

    Barbu de Watermael Chickens

My Greenfire chicks so far. 8 roosters 5 pullets, not all in picture. Need to get roosters homes soon, they are getting sassy.

    Barbu de Watermael Chickens

I have kept and hatched quail many times in the past. Even the tiny quail can pick through the dust/chunks of starter feed and eat what they need. With quail I used to blend the feed, until I learned they can pick what they need. I would lightly blend a half cup of feed, and keep the chicks on...

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

Update: 4th sick hen is doing great, no longer wobbling and falling over. No new illness noted in the remaining 4 chickens. Strangely, none of the roosters have fallen ill.

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/PS044 Current hypothesis: I think we messed up and kept old litter outside of the bars of the coop run for too long.

Neck of recently deceased. Neck feathers easily fall out/removed when lightly pulled... see second to last entry of following link.

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

Loose follicles on neck feathers. Feathers easily fall out. Erythmous/red throughout neck down to crop in patches. Incredibly quick onset of death. Surviving birds had/have severe muscle tone issues. I will update the status of the current hen. Currently wobbly and poorly balanced. 30 mg...

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

93-105 today. All 3 coops have survived 110 temps earlier this year without issue. Dosed entire flock in that coop with weight appropriate Baytril. I think it is botulinum toxin, I am doing a writeup with pictures from last death.

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

Third hen stumbling around. I literally have been checking on them every hour today. Hopefully caught it on time if bacterial. Dosing Baytril ASAP. IDK what else to do. Hen defecated as I set her down outside, seems normal.

Yes I have seen spiny caterpillars in the past. They have 2 trees directly by/over their coop I will go out and look over. Not sure what tree species, I chopped down all the Chinese Sumacs on the property, these are just little scraggly little trees.

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

The first fell ill on the old sand, which prompted the immediate sand change. The first bird didn't seem to be watery stool, and it was hard to tell because I withheld food until the crop seemed healthy in case of sour crop. Stools have been good since I resumed feeding with medicated chick feed...

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

On closer inspection we have some mounding around the outside of the run, a mix of sand/woodchips, and I'm sure poo from over time. Weather has been incredibly dry, but I do see large grub tunnels in the dirt. Definitely a possibility, although I'm not positive because it has been incredibly dry...

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

No access to compost, but botulinum would make sense given the speed of onset and muscle weakness in the surviving bird. She is back on her feet now, but it took days to gain muscle strength back. Can't check for buildup spots or possible anaerobic environments in the run because we swapped out...

Sudden onset suffocation and bird death.

I'm tossing the old food just in case, was kept in a large plastic container, usually food stays very dry here from a combination of heat/drought. Good idea with the stool sample just in case, that is affordable enough.

Help! Second chicken sudden death in less than 12 hours.

My wife's chickens are dropping like flies due to obvious suffocation/aspiration, being perfectly healthy just hours before. I wish you luck, we are torn up as well and trying to find a solution.
