Just want to update what happened.
2 days ago limping hen.
Yesterday same limp but seemed to be walking better.
This morning she did not get out of the coop at dawn. I moved her outside next to the feed and water. She didn't move at all or even eat. Went to my parents to take an old rabbit...
Hi my 20 week hen(australop) who laid her first egg this week has a swollen and hot hock. She was limping around last 2 days and today has just given up and only sits in her coop. I've placed her next to the food and water but she doesn't seem interest and often I catch her closing her eyes...
Just an update after a week. She has become progressively worse as days pass. It seems now that she has lost her other leg too and spends all day on her belly. All feathers raised and fluffed all day. No idea what's wrong but her knees look quite swollen. Poor quality of life as she can't get...
Thanks. I let them all out into the run at the crack of dawn and when to check on them few hours later. Found her not moving and chirping distressed.
She probably had a bad landing out of the coop as they literally come flying out in the morning
Hi. My 7 week old(pullet I think) has a limp starting today. She spends most of the day in one spot only moving a little for food and drink. I believe it's her foot on the left in the images. Any ideas? I tried to move her out of the coop in a warm cardboard box but she didn't like that at all...
Yeah there are foxes in my neighbourhood though I have never seen any. I'm currently building a large secure run. Going to buy some new baby chicks and start fresh again.
Also my yard smells like wet dog.
The mother hen has the head still intact but died to wounds. I'm guessing she fought off the predator and managed to keep 2 chicks alive. The headless girls were all at the foot of the fence in 3 corners of the yard where the mother hen was in the middle of the yard.
We don't have raccoons or weasels but we do have possums. They used to always mess up my veggie patch.
Is there a significant difference with a possum or owl? The girls were just out in the open and the chicks with the broody under a thick shrub.
Hey guys. Heartache this morning as I woke to find my flock all culled with their heads missing. I had 3 leghorn pullets and a australorp mother hen who just last week hatched 4 babies. Managed to find 2 chicks in the yard but the other 2 I assume were taken.
Don't want to post photos as I'm...
I should have enough room for a few chicks and mother hen. The hens all spend all day outside and only sleep in the coop at night time. My question is, how will egg production be with them on chick starter? I would expect smaller eggs I'd assume.
I won't have enough room in the coop to sleep in...
Her nesting area is in my garden bed so I might just fence off that garden bed and leave some chick fed and water for her. Time to find some fertile eggs!
Hi. I have 4 hens atm 3 leghorn and an australorp. The australorp has gone broody for 2 days and I've decided prehaps i can try hatch some eggs. Is it possible to just slide some fertile eggs under her and have her incubate them? Also if I do have baby chicks do I need to update my backyard...
So today I finally found the secret srash of eggs. I had built a nesting box for the girls a few weeks ago but often came home to see it empty. But today something caught the corner of my eye and saw this magnificent stash of eggs all under the bush next to the box.
Have four girls, probably...
